Russia ordered its top army command to begin returning troops to their permanent bases inside the country from Friday, saying it had successfully completed a "snap inspection"of forces in its south and west, near the
border with Ukraine, the RIA news agency reported.

The announcement prompted the rouble to rise sharply, following weeks of tensions with the West over a major Russian military buildup near Ukraine.

It was unclear if the rebasing order covered all of the forces involved in
that buildup. The EU's top diplomat said on Monday that Russia has massed
some 100,000 troops near the border.

"I believe the objectives of the snap inspection have been fully achieved.
The troops have demonstrated their ability to provide a credible defence
for the country," Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu was quoted as
    saying.

"In this regard, I have decided to complete the inspections in the
southern and western military districts," he said.

He said they would return to their bases by May 1.

Shoigu, after overseeing exercises in annexed Crimea near Ukraine's
southern border on Thursday, said however that the military had to be
ready to respond quickly in case of an "unfavourable" development in the situation near NATO's Defender Europe exercises, the Interfax news agency reported.

Defender-Europe is an annual, U.S. Army-led, multinational joint exercise designed to build readiness and interoperability between U.S. and other
NATO militaries, as well as other partners.

From March to June, more than 28,000 forces from 26 nations will conduct drills across more than 30 training areas in a dozen countries.

    ### - so the russians are pulling back eh?

    clever!

coz now if anything happens it'll be more obviously a ukraine aggression
rather than the other way around, and then the russians can say, well,
    they started it?

Slider, you never cease to amaze me.

I *told* you Putin was grandstanding and that nothing would come of
    it.

Now, as usual, I've been proven correct.

Yet, here you are - wheedling and trying to pull some glory from the
ashes (so to speak - I'm half kidding, of course :)

    Putin blinked. That's all.

None of your conspiracy theories have come to fruition. This one is
dead now, the Ukraine conflagration never happened, wasn't going to happen...and I predicted exactly what became of it, which is nothing.

Read my earlier posts and my rebuttals of your doomsaying
street-corner apocalyptic views. Nothing more than grandstanding.

See, Russia simply is too poor to engage in a full out war against a
strong enemy which conceivably could be backed up by the entirety of
NATO (around 400 million people with absolutely staggering industrial potential) and then, even by the US (330 million people with even
greater industrial potential). Russia wiith it's population of 140
million and impoverished military, low industrial output and huge
thinly populated area, cannot complete. Period!

It was grandstanding, precisely that. No invasion of Ukraine, the
Baltics, Poland or anywhere else. I think the oligarchs had a "little
    talk" with Putin as well.

And, of course, there's Navalny - even though he's locked up and
possibly dying, Putin is deathly afraid of this brave guy. His
movement is powerful especially in the far flung eastern provinces.

Putin the assassin has a lot on his plate. Fighting a war against 40
million Ukrainians and NATO is not something he's contemplating, not
now, not in the forseeable future.

Now, please - leave it alone...
