    Oh very young
What will you leave us this time
You're only dancing on this earth for a short while
And though your dreams may toss and turn you now

if you don't feel a hint of sadness in the line
"you're only dancing on this earth for a short while"
then you ain't alive boy. Our singer/writer smacks
us gently with his line. Off your feet you go. amazing eh?

    ### - Cat Stevens innit :)

plus is hard to believe he gave up music at one point to become a muslim?

(in that religion western music's from the devil etc etc, so he kinda had to...)

but, and to his due credit... he came back to it again later hehe...

which i guess doesn't say much for islam then hah!

and because this is the problem with people who're 'sincere' see?

they may get a bit lost sometimes and/or even go the wrong way, but
'being' sincere (iow: honest) they always tend to come back around to
    what's good & what's true in the end ;)

always liked him, he wrote some boss music in his early days, stuff that genuinely touched the heart, so how could that have ever been wrong??

    smile, obviously it wasn't :)

All good reads but now very dated. Things are very different nowdays.
Speed and coke the drugs of choice, mull legal or semilegal through
half the world and a raging pandemic which is mutating as we speak.

But thanks for the heads up...

I've been away by the way. A lot happening on my front.

    ### - i don't think kerouac becomes dated (or is dated) as his work stands
the test of time, and imho humanity needs his work (and his thinking)
probably more so now than ever :)

i.e., something happens to you when you read him, it never seems to be
about much in particular and is, am sure, not meant to be... but just
rambles along taking you along with him for the ride which all seems kinda strange to begin with but which eventually turns into a kind of
written-jazz, one in which you can't help but tap-along with to the beat
(pun intended heh; kerouac was of the beat generation)

that's it not really about dope and hippies & shit, or even some counter-culture but more that of living freely, of rolling along like he
does in 'On the road', until one begins to glimpse - through his stoned
but educated eyes - at the world in a manner that most people would likely never encounter otherwise: an alternate world view of free spirits iow
wherein drugs (and all the rest of it) are entirely optional, and/or only
used in the same way Leary suggested then in order to turn on, tune in &
drop out... the 'dropping out' bit being the only part that matters; the ultimate goal... all of them (all those writers) being like a living
    bridge 'to' that goal...

and what is that goal? to perhaps begin to actually see world(s) in a
grain of sand etc for oneself, instead of the dystopia we've made of our
world in our collective madness that is fast coming to an end; to see everything (and ourselves) anew as in seeing it all again for the first
    time like t.s. elliot said...

I cannot think that we are useless or God
    would not have created us.
And the sun, the darkness, the winds are all listening
to what we have to say.
