RUSSIA has warned the US to back down over growing crisis in North Korea – branding rising tensions "unacceptable".

Vladimir Putin's top diplomat Sergey Lavrov shared a phonecall with the US secretary of state Rex Tillerson discussing the crisis in the Korean
    Peninsula.

He urged the US to ease back over threats amid war could erupt between Washington and Pyongyang.

It comes as this morning the Kremlin urged "restraint" over the nuclear
    crisis.

The call also came just hours after US General James Mattis said in speech
the US Army must "stand ready" for war with North Korea.

“Moscow has called and continues to call on the parties involved in the conflict and on those who have anything to do with this issue to exercise restraint and to avoid any steps that would only worsen the situation,"
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said earlier today.

Putin himself has also warned about growing war fears in the region,
warning there is now a real threat of nuclear conflict.

Both Russia and China have called for calm in the region as relations
reach an all-time-low between Washington and Pyongyang.

Tensions have began to rise again amid fears Kim Jong-un is about to
launch another nuclear weapons test to mark the founding of the Worker’s Party of Korea.

Donald Trump took to Twitter to warn only "one thing" will stop the rogue state, in a social media post believed to be referencing military action.

The US President tweeted: "Presidents and their administrations have been talking to North Korea for 25 years, agreements made and massive amounts
of money paid hasn't worked, agreements violated before the ink was dry, makings fools of US negotiators.

"Sorry, but only one thing will work.”
