Oklahoma city ends face mask rule for customers after threats of violence

An Oklahoma city walked back an emergency declaration requiring customers to wear face masks inside businesses after threats of violence were hurled at store employees.

Officials in Stillwater announced the change Friday, less than 24 hours after the rule went into effect at stores and restaurants.

“In the short time beginning on May 1, 2020, that face coverings have been required for entry into stores/restaurants, store employees have been threatened with physical violence and showered with verbal abuse,” City Manager Norman McNickle said in a
statement. “In addition, there has been one threat of violence using a firearm.”

No further details were provided about the alleged threats of violence.

Stillwater Mayor Will Joyce said on Twitter that he didn’t expect the declaration to provoke a violent reaction.

“I knew there would be some objections, but I did not expect physical confrontations with employees and threatening phone calls to city hall,” Joyce wrote. “I hate that our businesses and their employees had to deal with
abuse today, and I
apologize for putting them in that position.”

He said that face masks still “strongly recommended” for residents when around other people — and will continue to be required for workers at public-facing businesses.

“We must find common ground and work together to deal with the circumstances our society is facing,” Joyce tweeted. “Whether or not we agree on the details, we have to find ways to cooperate in the task before us.”

Three people in Flint, Michigan, have been charged with first-degree murder for
allegedly killing a Family Dollar security guard who was enforcing the state's face mask mandate.

On Friday, Calvin Munerlyn, a 43-year-old father of eight, was shot and killed while on duty as a Family Dollar store security guard. The shooting took place after Munerlyn asked a group of customers to wear a face mask in compliance with coronavirus
safety protocols. On Monday, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton charged two
men and one woman with Munerlyn's murder.

According to Leyton, the incident started when Sharmel Teague, 45, entered the store with her daughter, who was not wearing a mask. Munerlyn told Teague that all customers must wear a mask to be served in the store. The incident escalated with Teague
spitting on Munerlyn and leaving the store.

Twenty minutes later, Teague returned with her husband and son, Larry Edward Teague, 44, and Ramonyea Travon Bishop, 23. The men accused Munerlyn of "disrespecting" Sharmel, and Bishop shot Munerlyn in the back of the head.

“From all indications, Mr. Munerlyn was simply doing his job in upholding the
governor’s executive order related to the COVID-19 pandemic for the safety of
store employees and customers," Leyton explained.

Sharmel Teague was arrested following the shooting. Bishop and Larry Teague are
both still at large.

A GoFundMe page set up to benefit Munerlyn's family described him as a "hard working, father and husband who lost his life while doing his job securing the place of business and asking all customers to wear a mask for our own safety as
well as others."
The family has raised nearly $63,000.

Gun sales maintained a record pace for a second straight month as people in the
United States rushed to arm up amid safety concerns over the growing coronavirus pandemic and the likely nomination by Democrats of the most anti-gun ticket in history.

As in March, when the sweep of the virus shocked the nation, the FBI today said
April background checks for gun sales and concealed carry permits hit a new record of 2,911,128 background checks, a surge of 576,879 over April 2019.

March recorded the highest ever number of background checks of 3,740,688, up 1,095,837 over April 2019.

While the numbers do not exactly match gun sales, the background checks give a rough indication of purchases, as some people buy more than one gun at a time, others go through the process to get a concealed carry permit, and some people are rejected.

The industry group Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting does calculate gun sales and found 1,797,910 sold. That included a 71% surge in guns purchased in April 2020 over April 2019. It estimated handgun sales jumped 83%, with 1,085,046 out
the door.

It also estimated rifle sales at 560,353, a year-over-year increase of 52%, in a report titled, “U.S. firearms sales: April 2020 unit sales continue drastic
COVID-19 related increase."

So far this year, SAAF said, there have been 7,012,322 gun sales.

The FBI reported that there have been 12,156,985 background checks in the first
quarter, already more than all of 2007 — and every year before.

Industry officials said 2020 is on a pace to be the best year ever for gun sales because of the virus and presidential election.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said on Monday that the American economy needs to reopen quickly and that tens of thousands of more Americans may die from the novel coronavirus, insisting that Americans are “gonna have to” accept that.

Speaking to CNN correspondent Dana Bash on her The Daily DC podcast, Christie—who now works as an ABC News contributor—pushed for the reversal of stay-at-home orders in order to open up businesses and ramp up economic activity.

Confronted with recent models that now show that as many as 135,000 Americans will die due to decreased social distancing amid the pandemic, Christie essentially threw up his hands and said there really wasn’t a choice.

“Of course, everybody wants to save every life they can—but the question is, towards what end, ultimately?” Christie said. “Are there ways that we can thread the middle here to allow that there are going to be deaths, and there are going to be
deaths no matter what?”

Echoing previous comments he’s made that the country cannot wait to reopen the economy, the former Trump transition team member asserted that “we’re going to destroy the American way of life” if people don’t immediately get back to work.

Bash then asked the ex-governor if the public could accept reopening following reports that a White House model is now projecting a daily death toll of 3,000 by June 1.

“They’re gonna have to,” Christie bluntly replied. “We’re in the midst of a pandemic that we haven’t seen in over 100 years. And we’re going
to have to continue to do things.”

Asked how he would tell the American public about the need to reopen if he were
the president, Christie responded: “The message is that the American people have gone through significant death before.”

“We sent our young men during World War II over to Europe, out to the Pacific, knowing, knowing that many of them would not come home alive,” he said. “And we decided to make that sacrifice because what we were standing up
for was the American way
of life. In the very same way now, we have to stand up for the American way of life.”
