Coronavirus lockdown measures could remain in place "for a very long
period of time", Downing Street has suggested.

It comes as Boris Johnson chaired his first Cabinet meeting since he was admitted to hospital with Covid-19, just over three weeks ago.

The Government was set to discuss its lockdown exit strategy as it faces ongoing pressure to release its plans while social distancing measures
    cripple the economy.

After the meeting, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman was asked about reports that the lockdown may be extended until June.

He said that the UK will have to take measures "for a long period of
time", telling reporters: “I think we will have to wait for the review to take place and I don’t think it is wise for me to pre-empt that.

“What you’ve obviously heard from Chris Whitty is that this is a disease that is going to be around for a significant amount of time – he’s said we have to be realistic. We’re going to have to do a lot of things for a long period of time.”

The spokesman added: “Let’s not pre-empt the review but, as the PM himself has said, the worst thing we could do is relax the social distancing
measures too soon and throw away all of the progress which has been made
thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of the British public.

The comments came after the PM chaired the daily coronavirus morning
meeting, followed by meetings of his political Cabinet and full Cabinet.

    ### - well that's it then, we's locked down good & proper now for the foreseeable future lol...

christ, everyone's gonna be rattling the bars of their cages before very
    long? hah :)))

plus good job they don't have guns in 'this' country huh! lol

i mean, they's already a pretty defiant lot here with now over 9000 fines having already been given for social-distancing offences?? lol they'll literally spit in your eye this lot and then tell ya they've gots the
virus so fuck you! (they've actually been doin' that to the police! lol)

and that's after only 5 weeks of lockdown??

haha better get ready for the backlash then downing street!

another 5 weeks without football and they'll be tearing the place apart!
    LOL :)))

problem is, they want any second wave of this shit to be smaller not
    bigger than the first?

so they'll obviously only release 'certain' things at a time and then
watch the resulting infections/deaths numbers and tighten/loose the screw accordingly, something that could easily take months & months depending on
    how it all goes?

they's prayin' for a vaccine now of any kind, something (anything! even
only a bit!) that'll dampen the sheer 'infectiousness' of this shit, only methinks they're gonna have problems getting rid of it? it remaining on surfaces for an inordinate amount of time + people not showing any
symptoms shedding for weeks etc etc, is a bastard to deal with!

all shops and areas open to the public would thus need to be sterilised
every day, the streets hosed down nightly with some kinda reducing agent, public transport vehicles disinfected daily, a huge list of to-do's, and
it still might not even work?

in which case, all that's really left, is to get the daily numbers down to (ahem, cough) 'acceptable' levels but with everything running again, so ok
we still gots 3 or 400 people dying per day but at least we gots our
    society back kinda thing?

can't see what else they can do?

    so quite possibly!
