UK's Prof Powis said the timescale to tackle the spread of the disease is
more akin to a “marathon”, rather than a “sprint”.
Asked whether restrictions will continue until a vaccine is found, Prof
Powis said:
“The job of scientists and doctors and other clinicians is to provide the government with the best possible scientific advice as to the strategies
to manage this virus over the months to come, and probably over longer
than months, because it is highly likely that over time this virus will
become established worldwide in populations.
“So this was never going to be a sprint over a few weeks, this is going to
be a longer race. It is going to be a marathon.”
Asked if ending the lockdown will be an economic decision, rather than a
health one, Prof Powis said there is “no easy course through this”,
adding: “There is no magical solution that doesn’t require difficult decisions and difficult choices to be made.”
