Residents in Los Angeles are flocking to buy guns amid a city-wide
shutdown due to the coronavirus outbreak. Footage has emerged of a long
queue forming around the outside of a weapons store, with people saying
they are worried for their safety if food runs out. The city has ordered
bars, restaurants, theatres and movie houses to shut down in a bid to
encourage social distancing and slow the spread of Covid-19.

Boris Johnson has said the nation must immediately avoid all
"non-essential travel and contact" and move to whole household isolation
in the fight against coronavirus.

The PM said groups particularly vulnerable to Covid-19 - those aged over
70 and those with pre-existing health condition - will be asked to stay at
home "for around 12 weeks" by the weekend.

He also called for household isolation, meaning people should self-isolate
for 14 days if they live with anyone who has any symptoms - a high
temperature or a new cough.

He made the plea as he addressed the nation after a Cobra meeting, as
health officials confirmed a total of 1,543 people have tested positive
for the virus in the UK since the outbreak began.

Mr Johnson added: We want to ensure that this period of shielding, this
period of maximum protection, coincides with the peak of the disease and
it is now clear that the peak of the epidemic is coming faster in some
parts of the country than in others. And it looks as though London is now
a few weeks ahead.

Chief medical officer for England professor Chris Whitty said measures to tackle the spread of the disease would need to be in place for a
“prolonged period”.

He said experts had examined the proposals – looking at mathematical
models and behavioural sciences – to find the measures which were the most effective but were also sustainable.

“This is going to go on for some time,” he said. “We should not be under any illusions that ‘if we just do this for a couple of weeks that is sufficient’.

“This is going to have to be a prolonged period.”

Prof Whitty said some of the measures that they are imposing may have
negative impacts on health themselves.

He said the three groups of people who need to take particular care to
self isolate are:

- Older people above 70
- People who are in adult life would normally be advised to have the flu vaccination
- Women who are pregnant.

He said that it is “important that Londoners now pay special attention
about avoiding non-essential contact and to take particularly seriously
the advice about working from home and avoiding confined spaces such as
pubs and restaurants”.

(it's already too late, this damn thing was infectious for maybe a week or
more before anyone even showed any symptoms? so it's already everywhere!
thus all major pass-through centers (like london, rome, paris & new york
for example) are all exploding with it now, with everywhere else to
follow...)

seems to be working though; figures are falling everywhere they've really locked-down coz it slows the rate at which it spreads, thus giving us more
time to detect + deal with individual cases instead of having to just
shovel them into mass graves (which is what is rumoured happened in china before they jumped on it for real?)

(they were all a bit slow off the mark this time was all + you can bet yer bottom dollar they'll defo shave a few weeks off of that the next time lol

calls the tune to mind? and had been content to leave it at that just for
that effect alone, one that is somewhat like cc's idea of 'key triggers'
and our mind then fills in the blanks etc kinda thing hehe...

but that video is great haha, really enjoyed that, and directly reminds of
an excerpt from a dennis potter play where the cast occasionally all come
to life just like that singing & dancing lol, brilliant! (you'd like
dennis potter, if you haven't already seen any of his stuff before; a
great example of a writer with something to actually say; who's prompted/inspired to write from the realisations he's personally had/experienced rather than merely resorting to making things up, just a
single line (or realisation i mean) under those circumstances often being enough to wrap a whole play around just in order to then present/transmit
the idea to everyone else in artistic form, potter being a master of that
+ if you can ever get hold of an original copy of his play 'The Singing Detective' (1986) am sure you'd love it, not only for his style (which is similar to that video) but also for the 'message' he so cleverly encodes
in it and walks the viewer through, delivering it so beautifully &
hilariously! not to mention memorably :)

in this instance; the story of some poor bastard with crippling psoriasis, stuck in a hospital bed half hallucinating and half awake and trying to
put it all together in his mind haha, really excellent stuff re the human condition ;)
