SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA has been rocked by a 7.1 magnitude earthquake just two
days after Thursday’s powerful 6.4 magnitude quake hit the region - but
does that mean the ‘big one’ is on the way? One USGS seismologist has issued a chilling warning that worse could follow.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck at 4.19am BST (8.20pm local time on
Friday) approximately 10.6 miles northeast of Ridgecrest at a depth of
10.5 miles, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Its
force was eight times more powerful than Thursday’s 6.4 magnitude
earthquake near the town, which had at that point been the largest
earthquake to hit Southern California, USA, in two decades. Authorities
say they only have reports of minor injuries so far but the damage caused
was more “significant” this time around. Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden said: "We've got fires, we've got gas leaks, we've got injuries, we've got people without power, we're dealing with it as best we can."
Is the 'Big One' on the way?
Southern California has been overdue the so-called “Big One” for several years and nerves are now rattled as to whether a potentially devastating
quake is imminent.
The US state sits on the notorious Ring of Fire belt, an area of rife
seismic activity responsible for 90 percent of the world's earthquakes.
USGS seismologist Dr Lucy Jones said more quakes were certain in the
coming days - and there is a chance a mammoth one could happen.
She told a press conference: "Every earthquake makes another earthquake
more likely.”
The expert tweeted there was a "1 in 10" possibility of another
7-magnitude earthquake hitting within the next week.
Earlier she had predicted a “1 in 20 chance” today’s earthquake will be followed by something bigger.
Dr Jones tweeted: “This is the same sequence. You know we say we 1 in 20 chance that an earthquake will be followed by something bigger? This is
that 1 in 20 time.
“Like any quake, today's M7.1 has a 1 in 20 of being followed by something even bigger. Smaller quakes - M5s are likely and a M6 is quite possible.”
Today's quake was felt as far north as Sacramento, as far east as Las
Vegas and as far south as Mexico.
A rockslide closed State Route 178 in Kern River Canyon, where photos from witnesses also showed that a stretch of the road had sunk.
In Los Angeles, buildings shook for as long as 30 seconds rattling nervous residents.
Daniel Earle, 52, of Playa del Rey, felt the quake while watching a
baseball game in the LA Dodger Stadium.
He said: ”Everyone was jumping over us to leave. People were freaking out.
There was a concession guy, and he actually was really cool because he was really calm. He's like, 'Relax. Tranquilo. Relax. Tranquilo,' and people
were looking around.
"My wife was holding us, like squeezing. I'm surprised my arm is still
here. She was squeezing into it so hard."
### - looks like ya's might just have dodged a bullet there eh?
2 largish quakes in a week surely easing the tension along that fault
some...
always wanted to know what one felt like though, preferably from a
safe/open spot lol
happy 4th july folks, so how'd like them fireworks eh?
(7.1 was quite big, you'd never hear the end of it if one that size
happened here lol)
you might even get another one? if there is let's just hope it's smaller
and not larger huh...
