### - been watching this series here which has now reached episode 7/9
covering the decade from 1877 - 1887, and in which buffalo bill is
featured becoming a huge attraction with his traveling wild west show...
quite a good historical series really and not at all pretty (which is what
i like about it) a dreadful history actually of how the west was won, plus which at this point has already been basically conquered with only bill
cody's reenactments left now of particular events for people to see, bill putting on 2-shows per day, 6 days a week to great acclaim and to which millions came to see... even at one point to the genuine chief sitting
bull appearing once per show and signing autographs afterwards, his pay
for this being $50 per week + whatever he personally made from later
signing photos of himself... quite a lot of money in those times
the commentary going on to then describe how sitting bull often wandered
the streets donating much of his earnings to the poor and the homeless
whites he encountered, never understanding how people could be left in
such dire poverty...
he may have been a 'savage' in western terms, but was actually ever more
human & humane than those who called him such, and who appallingly left
their own poor to just rot on the streets...
just how all that (and our so-called civilisation) must have appeared to
him, one can only guess...
but it must have seemed like complete & utter madness to one such as he...
a total outsider :)
