Why on earth would Microsoft develop a Linux Kernel for?

How will this affect bbses and Linux as a whole?
When Microsoft plays nice, they have a plan cooking like they did with the DOS BBS days. They want to spy on Linux users I bet.

It might be helpful to provide a link to where you're seeing that - but I did a search online and found some articles. It seems Microsoft has opened up to the idea of open-source software in the past several years. Microsoft even provides versions of Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code (a lighter code editor) for Linux. It seems Microsoft has acknowledged that they were losing the fight to Linux and open-source software, so it's possible they figure they might as well support it (if you can't beat them, join them).
At the same time, given Microsoft's history and their past behavior, there's a part of me that doesn't quite trust them, and I wonder what they're up to. I'm not sure if their long-term goal is really to just better support Linux or if they'll end up trying to sabotage the open-source community somehow. Years ago, I heard Microsoft was trying to sue over supposed copyright infringements in some open-source code (I think one thing was some use of Microsoft network code in BSD or Linux distros).

I've been suspicious of what they're doing too. However, I doubt they're deep into the Linux kernel code or anything like that. And I believe there's a group of developers who review the code being committed, and if there's any sort of spyware, I'm sure they probably wouldn't let it make it into the standard Linux code.

You know, I read lots of websites on Microsoft's spying techniques over the years, maybe call it conspiracy theories but it's still spying any way you look at it. I remember when the registry first came out with Windows 95 and now Windows 10's Face Identification system, it starts to make you wonder how much privacy we really have. Food for thought. Privacy is only a word to make people feel safe but in the long run it doesn't exist. Take a look at George Orwell's book, 1984, which talked about Big Brother watching over us. Scary thing but so very true at the same time.
there), but I've turned off the tracking settings that Windows 10 provided, though I'm not sure if there's more that it's tracking. I've heard people say they're concerned about tracking and data collection in

All BBSs are going to have to either migrate to MS-DOS or simply
shut down. It's a damn shame.
Probably the only thing keeping me from switching now is that there are somegames & apps for Windows I like to use that I don't think have a Linux equivalent.
I would be a hell of a lot more concerned (I'm not personally) about the tracking of smartphones than I anything from Windows 10.

Yep. At least it'll be easy to run DOS doors. We got that going
for us, at least. I'M NOT SHUTTING DOWN!!!

for the same reason they developed their own java...

MS has been contributing to the Linux kernel for a while... mostly in
the context of running Linux under a hypervisor/vm. They've actually contributed quite a bit. They have their own builds for use on/in
Azure. Of course they're using both Linux and a slimmed down version
of Windows for various workloads.

No doubt some of this work found its way into WSL as well. :)

Probably at least WSL2, which is an actual Linux kernel, WSL1 is using
a shim, similar to WINE, but in reverse.
Yeah, remember when they released that DOS update that used config.sys
