    I haven't heard about any sysops arguing with users about the voting. Where are you seeing this?

    Well look at all the trouble it caused me using it, for example.

    There was no arguing there between sysops and users, it was mainly other users noting that you often upvote your own messages, which is a bit tacky. That's not really what message voting is intended for.. Normally you'd upvote/downvote other messages.
    Upvoting your own messages is like patting yourself on the back.
