If you have the avatar-export event configured then yes, this should be happening.

Avatars are unique to a user+origin pair, which is to say that the avatar you choose for yourself on a given BBS will only be shown alongside messages that you send from that BBS.

If you're logging into other boards and not seeing an avatar alongside messages that you posted from your own system, there could be a few things going on. Maybe the sysop needs to update things; these features have stabilized somewhat, but there were a few points in the initial couple of weeks of work where they were broken. Maybe your avatar just hasn't propagated to these systems yet. Maybe they don't have the avatar import event set up.

    Exporting Of Avatars

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that if I made me an avatar on my system, it would be exported to all systems that have been upgraded to use avatar that I am a member of. That is not happening. I am having to select my avatar on every system. The starange thing is, I'm seeing other systems avatars on my system. Have I possably missed something in the setup. I followed the setup to the letter, and I have both import and export enabled. What am I missing, or do I have to manually set my avatar on every system?

    Exporting Of Avatars

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that if I made me an avatar on my system, it would be exported to all systems that have been upgraded to use avatar that I am a member of. That is not happening.

No, that's the design. There could be another "Digital Man" on another BBS in DOVE-Net (god forbid) and I wouldn't want my chosen avatar to be assigned to *that* Digital Man.

The personal avatars that are exported are used to identify you (your alias) on a particular network node (e.g. DesotoFireflight@VAHALLA). If you're a member of multiple BBSes, then yes, you could have to select (or upload or edit) your avatar on all them.

    I am
having to select my avatar on every system. The starange thing is, I'm seeing other systems avatars on my system. Have I possably missed something in the setup. I followed the setup to the letter, and I have both import and export enabled. What am I missing, or do I have to manually set my avatar on every system?

Yes. We don't have a network-wide alias reservation system, so there could be a different DesotoFireflite somewhere, but there will only be *one* DesotoFireflight@VAHALLA. :-)

In the (almost) 11 years I've been running Synchronet and reading Dove-Net, only now have I run into another person using 'Nightfox' as a handle on another BBS on Dove-Net. I have been using 'Nightfox' since 1994 and had seen references to other Nightfoxes on the internet but have never run into another one personally until recently..

Ahh, ok. I thought that it would appear at login like on my bbs, and other areas. I thought is was a global thing. Now I understand, it just goes toother systems with my messages if the other system is set up.

while we're at it, we might as well have a collection of religious symbols and idols as well :-P

Ah yes, what better place to show my support of Moloch than on bulletin board systems!

Well, if you were rastafarian, we'd at least twist one up :-P

I was already considering a marijuana leaf; now I'm going to make that and an ankh and the cross-buster.

Isn't "Allah" just their word for "god"?

yeah. you probably arent supposed to draw allah or use his real name.

i'm wondering if they can draw jesus because he's considered a prophet by muslims.

It is. But you're not supposed to draw him/it or their prophet, Mohamed. I think it's Mohamed you're not supposed to draw pictures of, it's a major offense to the Muslim religion (I think... I don't know much about it).

    Howdy,

Thanks. :-) It was my intention all along, but I didn't consider that most sysops would only import SYNCDATA via one network technology (e.g. QWKnet) while seeing messages from those same systems/users on other network technologies (e.g. FTN) - so there
was a gap there in the association between the 2 net-types and thus avatars weren't usually working on FTNs. It was pretty easy to fix but does require that systems update to SBBSecho v3.12 to see the benefit.

You'd need access to the SBBSDATA echo as part of your multimail feed,
and it would need to keep a local database.

I do think a web service lookup would be a good idea for other clients
to integrate with. Though it might bloat the output, even having the
author avatar as a header in the qwk packet as an option for each
message or extension file might be an idea as well.

Well, the first part is easy, given that I would be accessing my BBS.

Sounds like it needs a bit of thought. I haven't looked into avatars at all yet, because for me they currently serve no practical purpose.
