I'm curious to know why my BBS (Stepping Stone BBS) isn't appearing on the SBBS Instant Messaging List of BBSes when I log in on other boards. I see other boards just fine on my own system. Port 25 is open and that port as well as the other ports are forwarded in my gateway (router). Any ideas?

Do 'the other ports' include 11/udp and 18/tcp? Maybe review the above page, especially the 'Requirements' section and see if anything differs
in your setup.

Your system is currently listed in the official list (ftp.synchro.net/sbbsimsg.lst):
vintagebbsing.com
99.74.239.111 Stepping Stone BBS
Now, your BBS won't "appear" in the inter-bbs IM list on other systems unless there is someone actually using your BBS (online) at that
moment.

port 25 is smtp... you also need finger (79 tcp/udp), msp (18 tcp), and
11 udp IIRC...

Have you tested port 11 (if that's what you have configured for
ActiveUser or ActiveUser-UDP) from outside of your network to ensure it
is actually working? Do you have log entries for ActiveUser-UDP?

That's just the thing though, I connect on Vert and on my own BBS at the same time; while I'm on mine I can see my name listed on Vert, yet at the same time I don't see my name/bbs while I'm on Vert (being logged in on mine also).

Maybe you're in quiet mode on your BBS? You can use a finger client or
a netcat/nc connection to your finger or active-user/systat service on your BBS to who's online/active:
$ nc -u vintagebbsing.com 11
User Action Time-on Age
Sex Node ------------------------- ------------------------------- -------- --- --- ----

I get the same result when I use finger vintagebbsing.com even with me logged in.
That's an idea for quiet mode with my BBS. I'm not sure if I am in quiet mode or
not. How might I turn off quiet mode or get out of that mode so it shows me active when I use finger vintagebbsing.com?
Perhaps because I am using my SysOp account? A shot in the dark would be that
have a flag set that puts me in this mode automatically. I'll try logging in
s
a regular user and see if that makes a difference.

If you have the 'Q' exemption (and you probably do), then you'll have
this option on the Defaults menu:
[D] Default to Quiet Mode : Off
Make sure it is set to "Off" (unless you *want* to be logged in in
quiet mode).
Perhaps because I am using my SysOp account? A shot in the dark would be that
