In the past I have used binkit successfully with binkd mailers but
have had trouble with Mystic's binkp mailer. What setting should I use
to connect to a Mystic BBS?
I haven't connected with a Mystic BinkP implementation yet.
I had binkit running for about an hour overnight and binkit recieved a few inbound sessions with a link running mystic. The files were received and tossed fine but it looks like they were received in my unsecure directory.
I see "BINKP CRAM-MD5 of password does not match" in my syslog.
sbbsecho
also packed that mail for a point that gets sent across the lan to a binkd mailer and when I polled binkit from that mailer it looks like there was a successfull session but there was nothing to pick up in spite of the fact that there was mail to pick up.
I'm going to go over my settup and try this out again when I get home tonight.
Hello All,
I haven't used binkit in some time and am about to have a fresh look at it so I'd like to hear any comments or pointers you can give me.

I see these two settings "AllowUnencrypted" and "AllowPlainPassword" in the binkit wiki page. I see both are not recommended but when would they be needed?
I think Mystics mailer sends the password in MD5 mode, is that considered unencrypted?

check the length of your password... eight characters is traditional MAX for FTN stuffs... binkd will take longer passwords but it is best to limit to eight... also check your capitilization, ohs vs zeros, ones vs capital eyes vs lower ells... those are the first things i can think of...

During that same session (where files were received into the unsecure directory)? Or was this a different session?
Add the AllowUnencrypted=yes to each node that is how I got mine working
Here is a section of my /var/log/messages from when I polled from my
point yesterday. It looked like a successful pwd protected session on
the remote side with binkd mailer but no mail was receieved when there
was waiting mail.

Sounds like you are successfully transfering mail with binkit. What mailers are you connecting with?
My targets are binkd, mystic and irex.
There could be others too like BBBS that I think will require AllowPlainPassword but I'll see when the time comes.

The binkd mailers log ends with "pwd protected session (MD5)"
and "session in CRYPT mode"
so I think the session is good.
I'm about to cvs update and try again.
Thanks for your input.

That log output is from your services, which is used for incoming BinkP sessions. The outgoing connections (e.g. polling or sending outbound mail) will be logged from the event thread (with "evnt" prefix in the log entries).
I couldn't find anything that I think will be interesting to you.
I do see log entries like this for binkout..
Mar 2 03:21:10 trmb synchronet: evnt Semaphore signaled for Timed Event: BINKO UT
Mar 2 03:21:10 trmb synchronet: evnt Running timed event: BINKOUT
Mar 2 03:21:10 trmb synchronet: evnt Updating /sbbs/ctrl/sbbsecho.ini
Mar 2 03:21:10 trmb synchronet: evnt Updating /sbbs/ctrl/services.ini
Mar 2 03:21:10 trmb synchronet: evnt Timed event: BINKOUT returned 0
And this one for binkpoll. It was the only one I could find where it looks like it tried to poll 316:36/1 but I don't know what the remote log looks like.
Mar 3 00:28:13 trmb synchronet: evnt Running timed event: BINKPOLL
Mar 3 00:28:13 trmb synchronet: evnt Running outbound
Mar 3 00:28:13 trmb synchronet: evnt Attempting callout for file /sbbs/fido/ou tbound.13c/00240001.dlo
Mar 3 00:28:13 trmb synchronet: evnt Callout to 316:36/1@whispnet started. Mar 3 00:28:13 trmb synchronet: evnt Timed event: BINKPOLL returned 0
Is there a way with "exec/jsexec binkit" that I can force a poll to my point?

irex is going to possibly be a/the real beeotch because it has a half implementation of binkp 1.1... it was that or something with one of the addon capabilities... i forget the details but it causes problems with systems written strictly to the spec...

Irex seems to be working here with binkit on my end. It's early stages
now but it looks good. :)
Has anyone else noticed any difficulties in their nodes sending stuff? It seems like my hub can send me stuff, but I can not send anything over due to a
likely socket error. I am using Internet Rex.

Got any logs to share? Or perhaps the node running BinkIT has some logs to share?
I also used WWIV's binkp client as well to test what was going on. But I do have them. I
don't mind trying to help make all the products we use better.

Okay... so want to provide some of those log messages?
So I have two questions about binkit.
1) Does binkit support IPv6 outbound polling?
The reason I ask, is I have an
uplink that is using IPv6, but when I poll it, nothing happens:
Attempting poll for node 1337:1/0@tqwnet
JSBinkP/1.120 callout to 1337:1/0@tqwnet started
connecting to 1337:1/0@tqwnet at hub.uk.zt.erb.pw
Connecting to 1337:1/0@tqwnet at hub.uk.zt.erb.pw:24556
Connection to hub.uk.zt.erb.pw:24556 failed.
2) How does binkit handle updated nodelists?
I found out that in sbbsecho.ini, I need to have the full name of the nodelist for Nodelist=, ie
[domain:tqwnet]
Zones = 1337
DNSSuffix =
NodeList = ../fido/nodelist/tqwnet.169
But when the nodelist gets updated, does the nodelist_handler.js update this to the current nodelist.
(Sorry, havent had tics come in, and havent yet got my head around how synchronet handles tic files and special tic files like nodelists.)
That host is apparently IPv6 only and I don't have IPv6 setup here, so I can't really test it. Deuce (you can find him in #synchronet at
As far as I know, yes. But Deuce is really the IPv6 guy.
change that extension to .txt... when you get tickit working and have the nodelist_handler part in place, the handler will extract the nodelist from the archive and put it in the given directory with the given name... if you

You can create an IPv6 environment pretty easily using ZeroTier. (I'm happy to help if you are interested.)
So while your ISP provider doesnt offer IPv6 (mine doesnt), you can
have a private IPv6 network (which is what we use in TQWnet for the
hubs.)

Ahh, awesome. Tks I'll give it a go...
Not sure if this needs to go to you or Deuce.
I seem to have a monthly, sometimes bi-weekly issue getting echomail/netmail from my Fido HUB and have to send a msg so they can clear whatever on their end.
Today I received a msg indicating this might be a problem beyond just
my bbs per the last few sentences in their response. I've included their msg, and my service.log from that time. I couldn't find anything else relevant to this issue that may be needed. If I've missed something, please let me know and I'll include it.

I see the connection at line 39, then the service thread terminated further down, with another inbound connection. Nothing on my end indicates a timeout unless I missed something but that was my first guess from their log.
Ah, I found in that log output: Mystic/1.12A46 binkp/1.0

I'd ask g00r00 what he thinks about that log output. :-)
BinkIT was written by Deuce, so he would be the better one to talk to about it.

And what BinkP implementation is your Fido HUB using?
The name and version of their BinkP software might help.

You might want to talk to your hub about updating at 1.12A47 as g00r00 has fixed numerous issues with the BinkP server.

Actually, wrong ftn connection here's the one I'm having problems with:
Nov 23 20:07:18 nemesis sbbs: 11/23 20:07:18 srvc 0073 BINKP Peer version: Internet Rex 2.67 beta 1a OS/2 (binkp/1.1)
At this point, not sure if this is BinkIT bug or (likely) IRex, if the later, maybe something can be cooked up to play nice with it?
