Yes. It basically won't work without one. You might even want to consider *two* VPNs.

Against what? I suppose if you're hosting a lot of pirated files for download or have other traffic you want to hide from your ISP, you might want to run a VPN for your BBS. Otherwise, a VPN would make it look like your BBS is somewhere else, and I'm not sure why you'd want or need to do that.
If you're just running a BBS for messages, online games, and the usual files sysops carry, I don't think there's any real reason to use a VPN for a BBS. Synchronet also supports SSH, but it seems most people would rather use telnet than SSH to log into a BBS..

Well, for a while, I did. However, the VyprVPN service I subscribed to through Giganews provided routeable public IP addresses at each connect, so I could be behind a "walled garden" (ie like at a hotel) and still
run the BBS over a public IP address after connecting to the VPN. I may have to go back to that setup when I have to revert to usin cellular broadband access.

Making up new words here? Keep in mind that the majority of VPN
services provide non-routable IP addresses upon connecting to them,
unless you find one that does provide this feature.

No, I just wanted to make it accessible from outside my hotel's router since I did not have direct access to their cable modem.

Here! Here! To that one. I didn't lead a very blissful life either with being bullied in school for several years suffering a tremendous amount of stress and abuse which has caused me to be traumatized for life because of it. :-(
