umonitor is text based... it will work from a local or ssh/telnet console...

gtkmonitor is GUI based... you have to at least have

1) a window manager running
2) the gtk libraries available

both on the machine gtkmonitor is running on...

the answer to the question posed is either/both may be in a linux installation of sbbs...

Can't speak for gtkmonitor, but just found out I could run umonitor from
WSL2 against my windows install of synchronet. (copied ctrl/sbbs.ini to ctrl/wsl/sbbs.ini and edited the CtrlDirectory to /mnt/c/sbbs/ctrl/)

Nifty.
