I don't know, but if you're making text files with Synchronet attribute codes, often you can put \1 instead (that's literally a backslash followed by the number 1) in place of a Ctrl-A, and Synchronet will interpret that as the Ctrl-A for the attribute code.

I think that's only true in the text.dat and other source files (e.g. Baja or JavaScript source code).

that depends on the editor you are using with mc...
if you are using mcedit, you hit CTRL-Q and then the character you want to
CTRL-Q CTRL-A
will insert the ^A character for you...
