• BUG !!!

From Cmech@1:229/2 to All on Friday, June 22, 2018 21:04:22

    Hi All,

Do NOT go to Mystic Configuration, Networking, Echomail addresses, and press Enter on the 1st entry!!! Mystic will wipe out the entry! It would be safer to just NOT use the first entry, as all others seem fine. I have confirmed this bug on two diffferent systems, one I just built from scratch (Laptop point Mystic, minimal config) and the other my main which has been running a looong time. lol

To fix the bug, just re-enter the info into another line, except 1st one :)

    yes...

Well that's the gateway software I am running. I thought binkp.net had usurped the role of fidonet.org as the latter had been lost to squatters while the former is a service offered to all who sign up?

AFAIK, binkp.net is /only/ for fidonet address fnz conversion lookups... i doubt that binkp.net accepts email for fidonet systems and gates it to netmail but it is possible... i'm testing that theory right now ;)

ahhh! ok... it does work but

    1. there has to be an entry in binkp.net which there should be since it is maintained from the nodelist.

    2. there is no email->netmail conversion done by binkp.net.

    3. the SMTP server initially receiving the email performs the lookup on binkp.net.

    4. if there is a valid IP for the fnz address, the SMTP server will attempt to connect to a SMTP server at that IP.

i tested this by sending a test email to myself via my f12.n3634.z1.binkp.net address... i sent one through my ISP and their SMTP mailer connected directly to my perimeter SMTP mailer to deliver the test message... i sent another one through gmail... it also looked up my address on binkp.net and connected directly to my perimeter SMTP server for delivery...

now here's where it gets tricky over here... on my perimeter firewall, i run a mod that provides a SMTP server... this is my perimeter SMTP server as noted above... it is inbound only and it scans and validates all inbound emails before they are bounced or sent to one of my three internal SMTP servers... i watched the messages being validated on one of my internal SMTP servers but the
perimeter SMTP server didn't know the destination address was valid for one of
the SMTP servers on this site so it rejected both test messages... i have some
    configuring to do

i have not (yet) seen a bounce from the test message i sent to ben's address above... it might take a while to bounce if that's what it is going to do... i don't know if ben has a SMTP server or if he has one that knows his address is also f68.n393.z1.binkp.net in addition to any other domain addresses he has...

this test has actually been quite informative O:)

!ALSO! in light of this testing, i fully retract my previous statement about the address being invalid... It.Is.Valid... whether or not there is a SMTP server at the IP returned by binkp.net is another matter... if that SMTP server
will accept inbound emails addressed to that binkp.net address is another 2nd matter to deal with...

FWIW: above i say that i have some configuring to do... yeah, on three of the SMTP servers living here... adding an ""alias"" on two of them and routing on the third... whew... at least a quick mental rundown seems to point to that being what needs done... hehahahahehe...

i can also now report, since i got the bounce finally, that the posted address for ben won't work... apparently he doesn't have a SMTP server that recognizes his valid binkp.net address...

i /think/ all of mine are working now... turnes out i only had to adjust two of the SMTP servers, here... the front line one had to be told to allow those through and the internal routing one had to be told where to send them... everything else seems to just work ;)

You're thinking of fidonet.net. fidonet.org has never supported f<node>.n<net>.z<zone> style DNS lookups.
