• Mystic and a POTS line

From Erazmus@21:1/133 to All on Friday, June 29, 2018 16:52:31
    Hello All,

I know Mystic doesn;t support POTS out of the box, but I'm interested in
adding POTS support, because I've 'acquired' a POTS line, and I may as well make use of it.

I seem to recall some discussion about some front-ent piece of software that will accept the call, and then basically translate that into a telnet session into Mystic.

Also, if I'm running POTS, I guess I should really be able to send/receive
mail via POTS as well as BinkP. Any suggestions on how I should go about
doing this? If anyone is playing with POTS on their Mystic, I'd appreciate
    some suggestions.

Interesting question being soon as I move to Creede,CO I may be in the same boat living 30 mins outside of town.

And also use both if I can.

Is it really? I have an old copy of Wildcat! v4 Dos, if I can ever find my v.everything USR modem I was considering tossing it online to give those
local to me a BBS to call. Plus I have a local User Group who would love a
BBS that they could use to chat between meetings, so this would be perfect,
if it is indeed abandonware I would most likely toss it online for them to
    use and call their own.

Really? I have an issue (well, not really) and I need someone to route netmail to a pots only node. Could I interest you in doing that?

I seem to recall some discussion about some front-ent piece of software that will accept the call, and then basically translate that into a telnet session into Mystic.

Synchronet includes sexpots, I believe it does that although I have never used it and I don't know if it will work outside of Synchronet.

Also, if I'm running POTS, I guess I should really be able to send/receive mail via POTS as well as BinkP. Any suggestions on how I should go about doing this? If anyone is playing with POTS on their Mystic, I'd appreciate some suggestions.

10 years ago or so I built BinkleyTerm 2.60 from the source .zip just for the excersize. It built successfully but I didn't have a modem to try it out. If it will still build successfully (the source is 20 odd years old) that may be an option for you.

Sexpots is the suggested option. I have not used it but I recall g00r00 thinking it would be a good option. Digital Man is a good person to ask about it :)

I tested both mgetty and sexpots with Mystic a while back and they both worked fine. Sexpots is easy to use and just proxies the POTS caller to the telnet address/port you specify. mgetty was very fiddly to get going and involved generating a script upon each call to run a local instance of Mystic which
then gets piped back to the caller.

mgetty is more feature-complete in that it can detect an FTN connection and call a mailer, as well as pass the user's caller ID to Mystic using the host parameter in case you wanted to do caller verification or something. It's a much bigger pain the tail to get it to do what you want, though.
