    All,

    has anyone setup telneting from the Mystic web server yet? That's something
    I would really love to set up. I'd like to check out someone's web server
    from mystic to get some ideas/help for mine...

    Thank you

    Beery Seems to have figured out how to telnet from the web page, that's what
    I want to do too, I can figure out how to add the other stuff, which will be kinda easy, like the last callers, since mystic makes a ans/asc file, I can import those..

    Yes, I am. See http://9640news.ddns.net:8080/ .

    I'm using a script from ftelnet.ca which works fine with Mystic's http and telnet servers. I can load the webpage, click the telnet link, and have a Telnet session with the Mystic BBS inside a window on a webpage.

    All I had to do was setup the script. The only thing I did within "Mystic",
    was add a script to a html webpage. You are entering via a http server
    session that then proxies to a telnet connection within the http page.

    And the other nice thing about it is that it does not require someone to have
    a telnet client. They just need a web browser to login to Mystic.

    I've got a note into the author at www.ftelnet.ca regarding file downloading and Ymodem-G did not work with Mystic. I need to try out the SEXY version as well to see if it is a particular implementation of Ymodem, or something else.

    This is an example of what I was asking for soooo long ago with the whole tagline request. I'd like to have the ability to add taglines to my outgoing messages like many mail readers can do. I know you've been doing a lot of

    That would be unique, I've only seen taglines in offline readers, haven't seen an online tagline system. :) But where would the taglines come from? A global tagline file, or a per user file? Part of the fun of taglines is collecting your own. :)

    Not so unique. I am online now and this editor will add a tagline if you want it to. I'm using Nightfox's SlyEdit. It can be made to look like IceEdit or DCTEdit.

    It doesn't steal taglines like yours does though.. ;)

    This is an example of what I was asking for soooo long ago with the whole tagline request. I'd like to have the ability to add taglines to my outgoing messages like many mail readers can do. I know you've been
    doing a lot of work with the editor, so maybe it's not so hard to do?

    Haha, thanks. I just steal em. My old collection was even better, w a lot of rather raunchy ones in there. :D

    ... I want to be what I was when I started to be what I am now.

    1.10 added the following and could be used for such a method:

    [snip]

    + Added 3 new MPL functions: MsgEditor, MsgEditSet, MsgEditGet. These allow
    access to the internal Mystic msg editor (line and/or full) from within
    MPL. It even allows you to define wrap position and template to completely
    make it look like its not the Mystic editor!

    As a little hint the MsgEditSet and MsgEditGet stuff could be used to post
    process message text on posts. Like say for example you wanted to write
    a MPL that allows users to add Tag lines, you could do that by replacing
    the "Saving message..." prompt and using those two in order to modify the
    text before it is saved by Mystic!

    Rather than trying to explain it all, here is an example of all 3:

    Var
    Lines : Integer = 0;
    WrapPos : Integer = 79;
    MaxLines : Integer = 200;
    Forced : Boolean = False;
    Template : String = 'ansiedit';
    Subject : String = 'My subject';
    Count : Integer;
    Begin
    MsgEditSet (1, 'this is line 1');
    MsgEditSet (2, 'this is line 2!');

    Lines := 2;

    SetPromptInfo(1, 'MsgTo'); // if template uses &1 for "To:" display

    If MsgEditor(0, Lines, WrapPos, MaxLines, Forced, Template, Subject) Then Begin
    WriteLn('User selected to save.');
    WriteLn('There are ' + Int2Str(Lines) + ' of text in buffer:');

    For Count := 1 to Lines Do
    WriteLn(MsgEditGet(Count));

    Pause;
    End Else Begin
    WriteLn('User aborted the edit.');

    Pause;
    End
    End

    [snip]

    Cheers!

    I like the idea of being able to use the fortune which is a Linux
    command line program that spits out one liners. I use it on my login
    script. Reminds me of my university days.

    You know, now that I think about it, you are right. I've only ever seen taglines come from mail readers. I never really liked mail readers myself so rarely used them. I'm a big fan of Mystic's message editor so I'd like to
    see that option included if possible.

    Yes, I see no reason why the BBS shouldn't just use a master tagline file in the data directory, and how users can't just yank one from a message and add
    to the file... with the apropriate amount of dupe checking of course.

    I'm the opposite, I've always preferred offline readers to reading online. In the modem days there was no choice, it simply wasn't possible to read the volume of mail online that I read back then, when you only had an hour (90 minutes on generous boards) to do everything per day at 1200 bps. :) And that still holds true. I feel I'm able to get a better overall "view" of where I am in an offline reader, and other things like auto area jumping helps too, I don't have to remember what my next echo is to go into it. :) That said, Mystic's online message reading is still very good, probably better that I recall in the past, certainly no less. And the online editor is definitely better, with features unheard of back then.

    Today, you'd probably get away with it. Back in the day, a single master tagline file would have been a major problem, because of the sheer range of message areas we carried. My old tagline file has some pretty raunchy taglines that were quite appropriate on some message networks and downright offensive on others! :)

    Per user taglines could be done, you simply create and maintain a file called taglines-<userid>.txt, where <userid> could be either the user record number, if it exists, or their login name. Or the tagline file could be set when the user is created, defaulting to the above. The latter approach allows for the cae where one has to rebuild the user database by hand for some reason, or for a sysop who is very particular about things.

    I like the way it's done in SlyEdit. I has a master file that holds the taglines and asks the user if a tagline should be added then let's you pick one. The option can also be turned off if folks don't want taglines.

    MBSE also has a master file but doesn't ask if you want a tagline or let you choose, it just picks one randomly and adds it. I had to be very carefull when adding taglines to MBSE or it would say the wrong thing at the wrong time.. ;)
