• Changed server binding in A39

    From Tony Langdon@21:1/143 to g00r00 on Monday, April 23, 2018 07:49:55
Hi g00r00, just upgraded to A39. My setup is particularly complex, because I have two BBSs running on different IPs on the same ports on the same physical machine.

When I initially setup Mystic, I had the servers setup as IPv$+IPv6 with the relevant addresses in the IPv4 and IPv6 field. After upgrading to A39, I
found that my IPv4 ports weren't listening. I found I had to change all
those IPv4+IPv6 servers to IPv6, then add separate IPv4 only servers on the desired IPv4 address.

Everything is back working, just took a few minutes fiddling with the config
to get it all back up. :)

FYI, I'm running on a Pi, and I thought you'd be interested in this feedback.

Are you sure about that? Most Linux distros combine them, so if you are listening on IPV6 you are getting both.

That's only when listening on :: (0.0.0.0), but there's no way to do this between specific addresses. And I am 100% certain, because (1) I discovered the problem when attempting to log into my system, (2) worked out what was going by examining the output of netstat and then checking the Mystic configs, and I confirmed by separating out the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses into separate server entries, this restored IPv4 functionality on the specified addresses.

It's obviously not a show stopper, since there's an easy workaround, but thought you might be interested.

    To reproduce:

You need a Linux box with both IPv6 and IPv6 configured.

If you configure a server with IPv6 only on ::, all should be fine (listening on IPv4 and IPv6). Because of my setup, I didn't confirm this is still the case in A39, but if it wasn't, I'm sure someone else would have mentioned it!

However, to reproduce the issue I found, configure a server (doesn't matter which one, they all behave the same) as follows:

    Enabled - YES
    Protocol - IPV4 + IPV6
    IPV4 address - enter a specific IPv4 interface address (i.e. NOT 0.0.0.0)
    IPV6 address - enter a specific IPv6 interface address (i.e. NOT ::)

    Other options shouldn't matter.

In this configuration, A35 works as expected, listening on both the IPv4 and IPv6 addresses specified above. A39 will listen on IPv6 only.

If you instead configure two separate servers, one for IPv4 and one for IPv6, both listening on the same port, both IPv4 and IPv6 work properly.

My environment is a Pi running Raspian Wheezy. Would be interested to know if this happens on other Linux distros too.

I've reverted the code back to the way it was in A35 (at least I think I did) but I cannot update the prealphas until after I get some new hardware.

My system is so unstable now that I can't even get Mystic to compile... I've tried to release a prealpha but I can't. I can barely get things to boot, files are getting corrupted, my drive is dying and so is my memory.

Its an expensive time to build a new system too :(

I want to get this tested and release A40 before I take possibly a couple of weeks away.

I know you probably won't go for this, but if you like I can setup a few VMs for you to work on until you get a stable system. I've got tons of system resources to spare, and I definitely don't mind helping out with Mystic development.

I don't have a lot of money at the moment or I'd donate to help out, but I can help out this way if you like. If you'd be interested, drop me an email at sysop[at]throwbackbbs[dot]com with what OSes you'd like and your preferred method of connecting, I can set it all up for you.

A PC with what type of hardware would you be looking for? I have a couple
spare PC's here. I am sure that I could spare at least one to a useful
cause. Most have 3Ghz P4 CPU's with 8-16G of ram and 2-4 TB of HD space. I might even have a spare spare flat screen monitor. You gots to furnish your
    own keyboard and mouse. :-)

Oh, OK. And I should mention I have no idea what A36 and A38 do, I skipped those alphas. :(

My system is so unstable now that I can't even get Mystic to compile... I've tried to release a prealpha but I can't. I can barely get things

    Oh no! :'(

I'm having the same issues, but with a car, not the computers. :( And at an expensive time for me as well. I feel your pain. :(

I want to get this tested and release A40 before I take possibly a
    couple of weeks away.

Good luck. If you want me to test, I run on a Pi, but I could install a Windows prealpha on this machine (which fortunately also has multiple IPs - networking is fairly complex here! :) ), because I'm probably going to need a point to hatch nodelists from anyway.

Ironic, I just upgraded the microwave here to a newer/bigger one.
And just gave the older working one away.

Ya should have asked about a week ago. :-)
