• areafix possibility...

From Bill McGarrity@21:2/141 to gOOrOO on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 14:00:00
    Hiya...

I just linked to a mystic board for another network. I originally sent it an areafix with %+ALL in the body. It doesn't seem like Mystic offers that. Any possible way in future version you can put that and %-ALL. If someone has 30+ subs he wants to link to, that's a TON of work creating that netmail...

    Thanks..

True but I'm keen to use Mystic for Usenet and Fido etc. and there will be
way more echoareas to link to there. So I'd support such an option too if
    were possible :)

    There's 7 now, I just added another area. :D

And yes, for Usenet, well, that would be tedious, but a %+ALL could be dangerous too! :D

Oh I know... but you understand my concern. It was just a possible request that almost every other areafix understands (except for BBBS and its regex). Just to make life easier.. :)

Did you manage to get hooked up? You should currently have 6 echoes. And there is now a new echo, only just created, so it's not in the infopack yet, as the paint is still very wet. :D

Yes its finally time to add something like that. What uses that syntax? I've not seen it before.

There were a few things I wanted to do before I was willing to add that in, and that was echomail security and configurable default rescan limit per base (which are now done). Without having limiters something this could be bad:

    %ALL
    %RESCAN

Anyway we just have to figure out the format. I double checked CrashMail and FastEcho (the only two tossers I have here) and they do not support that syntax either. I want to try to keep the syntax relatively consistent as long as I can stomach it :)

I would go with %+ALL or %-ALL which will link all or delink all echo areas. My thoughts are if the FTN has many echos you want and just 2-3 you don't want, you can then do the following:

    %+ALL
    -<echotag1>
    -<echotag2>
    %RESCAN
    ---

Regarding rescan, I don't think you should change that. The options you give will allow for a total or partial.

FMail uses this to my knowledge. I am using it as the Areafix tool for now

I was asking what uses that Syntax "%+ALL". I understand what %+ALL would do :)

There is no standard definition for Areafix stuff, so what I am getting at is that I'm trying to select syntax that is the most compatible across various Areafix processors.

I've already committed to %ALL at this point though along with some other enhancements.

Regarding rescan, I don't think you should change that. The options you give will allow for a total or partial.

I haven't re-read what I typed but I don't think I mentioned that I planned to change the RESCAN command. I have no plans to do that at the moment.

I know all Synchronet systems do as well as Husky products. I'm linked with Janis and her system uses 'regex' which is a pain in the ass in itself but I think they also use the +/-ALL as well without regex.

It's more common sense when someone is joining a network for the first time. Import the .NA file to setup the echoareas within the board, then send a %+ALL to your uplink. Even a network with hundreds of echoareas you can be up and running in a matter of 5 minutes. As I said, if you're taking 75% or more of the echos it would be must faster to send the following:

    %+ALL
    -<echotag1>
    -<echotag2>
    -<echotag3>
    -<echotag4>
    %rescan
    ---

As I said, these are just my thoughts based on common sense standards.

Mystic's %ALL has the boolean searching used in other places in the BBS (message searching, events, etc) which is a more usable than regex. BBBS can do a lot but its a nightmare when it comes to usability (imo).

I find the fact that it uses regex for adding areas perfect example of that lol

Well thats sort of the thing... There isn't really a standard for it so I wanted to choose what is most familiar to people. After doing some research I think you're right %ALL is the way to go.

The next build will have a handful of Areafix changes including ALL.

Unfortunately the hardware on my DEV system is dying so I am not able to compile everything. I was planning to release A39 today but it sounds like instead I'll have to be dumping a bunch of money on new hardware :(

Agreed..... and I have voiced my displeasure about it to Janis but in all honesty, once you're used to it, it's like 2nd nature. As I said, I am linked directly to her for all the Fido backbone and am linked to a large hub in Sweden. All part of the "Fidoweb".

Why not get a personal cloud. I have one here that access anywhere in the world. I also have a 4TB external drive I use to mirror the entire server. Between the BBS, Icecast server, Game Server and other misc. "things".. at my age, a complete rebuild from scratch would be impossible.

Unfortunately the hardware on my DEV system is dying so I am not able to compile everything. I was planning to release A39 today but it sounds lik instead I'll have to be dumping a bunch of money on new hardware :(

If you find yourself in the Maryland area, I'm pretty sure I could dig up so hardware while spring cleaning. Especially if you are interested in a rack mount server. Just let me know what your looking for..

    Hey Mark,
I would be willing to give some stuff a new home :D I am in PA but work in MD and have actually been in your neck of the woods quite a bit. I drive dump truck and was actually just off Bel Air Blvd at Putty Hill paving it a few weeks ago lol

It's nowhere to be found here... As I said, create a filebox and drop
it in there. I'll see it in my secure inbound.

I do have a filebox for your vkradio address, but just need to do the fiddly part of copying the file across to the BBS (same issue as with hatching). Give me a reminder in 24 hours, today is a write off for
    that sort of thing.

    Not a problem... :)

Hi Barry.. An old friend of mine lives in Reading, PA and in the paving business named Alan Siekierski. You wouldn't happen to know him, would you?

Sometimes it is a small world. Yes, Bel Air Rd and Putty Hill is not too far from where I grew up. That is my neck of the woods.

I was planning on putting a few of these servers out in our yard sale next weekend - but I seriously doubt they will all sell (if at all). They just need
some DDR3 ECC memory and drives and they are ready to go. Spring cleaning time.. :)
