• Prealphas updated

From g00r00@21:1/108 to All on Saturday, December 16, 2017 23:40:38
I've updated the prealphas again for Intel Linux and Windows.

I am experimenting with different configuration forms if anyone has any feedback on what is there under Networking (its similar to the user editor).

Not sure what else has changed. Fixed a bug with mouse in Linux not
releasing the terminal, reenabled the busy log... other minor things probably.

Wow that looks amazing, is this being used now vs the normal 2 we use or this just something as to check out the options? I will start playing with this
    one this weekend. =)

The form pilot would replace the "Echomail Node" editor if I decide to use it.

And probably the message base editor as well at some point, and so on. I am trying to come up with a new form that will not run out of space to add more options and I figured I'd start by looking at what I did for the user editor.

I might make one that is just a giant scrolling listbox type thing with configuration options in it too, not sure yet. Running out of space in the configuration is the sole reason why there is no Echomail security system
    this weekend. :(

I like it and think it's a good solution to solving the amount of information you need to share.

The trick will be to ensure what needs to be on a given page fits on that
page or perhaps if things look too tight make the sections split across more than one page

    General
    Security Pt1
    Security Pt2
    BinkP
    FTP
    Directory

I'd also make the case as per above vs a mix of CAPS and First letter capital.

If you can be bothered perhaps add that as another test menu so we can have a look. If you do go that way will the display window be the same size? If yes, I'm picking pages is the way to go. It presents logical info in paginated fashion.

It could just be years of Doom playing talking but the numbered page interface feels perfectly natural to use. Also that Frontdoor theme is a keeper.

On a related note; any chance of a /Global edit for file bases like with message bases?

Okay thanks for the feedback. I wasn't sure if the perception would be that the options are too spread out. In the current Echonode edit you have everything there except the session options.

The other idea would be something scrollable similar to the area idex reader, where you could have little categories, but really its just one big list you can move around through.

I think pages would end up being easier to navigate, so I should probably
    just go with that.

    Thats great to hear!

Yep that theme was from Mystic2demo but it was inspired but many BBS-related softwares that used a similar interface. Remote Access, Frontdoor like you said, Internet Rex, etc.

A may add one to mimic the "Turbo Vision" style as well which was also popular for menus and all of Borland's programming editors back then. I've always tried to keep Mystic text-based and filled with nostalgia - like you're running a BBS in DOS again, so this sort of thing makes sense to me.

On a related note; any chance of a /Global edit for file bases like with message bases?

Yes, that is planned and its a higher priority than a lot of stuff on the list.

The issue right now is that I have to redo the message base editor and the global message base editing as well, because there are just too many options and I need to add even more for echomail "ACS"... It needs a redesign.

I want to try to come up with a workable system for message bases first so that once that is done I can go and redo file bases to edit in the same way for consistency. If I do file bases now, I might end up having to turn around
and redo it again soon after.

Looks good. I remember seeing that style somewhere else (in Mystic even), but don't rememer where.

BTW, as for the black background in the text editor, it definitely fixes the visual effect of the editor itself, but when you exit the editor and go back
to the main config screen, it mangles the config screen to fit the width of
    the window still.

That said, if you like the blue background better, I'd say stick with it and I'll just continue to use putty/ssh where things work better and look nicer.
No need to try to deal with something like that for one random person using a VMWare Remote Console app.

The thing that was odd in the logs is that fidopoll seemed to be unable to connect to any systems. I don't know if that was because they were actually down, or if something else was going on.

I definitely think the blue background gave more of an oldschool DOS feel
(like edit.com). However, the black background doesn't look bad either.
Almost like an edit.com meets nano feel to it. ;)

I can't say for sure if I like one better than the other, though. Either one

Yep thats pretty damn spot on actually! I tried to make it a little Nano-ish (esc+/ and esc+\, ctrl+K/U for cutting, etc) just because I know a lot of us use Nano, but also look like the DOS editor!

I've updated the pre-alphas for Windows and Intel Linux.

This one has a bugfix (hopefully) for the ANSI detection display and some other new goodies surrounding the text file editing. BINKP debug logging is also
    not enabled in this build.

Unfortunately, no other bugfixes for those that may be having any issues. I could use a refresher of any existing bugs/problems. I know someone is
having a 100% CPU issue, which is obviously a big deal. If anyone knows how
to reproduce this please let me know.

I am off work until Jan 2nd, but of course I have family and friends obligations... I should hopefully be able to get a lot done though in the
next week if things go well.

I am not on a Unix machine to test, but it should still work. When mouse support is enabled, you just have to hold down CTRL or something to be able to cut/paste, etc when the application has mouse support enabled. This may vary from terminal to terminal. I think Putty works that way as well but I cannot validate this at the moment.

There is no "fix" for this, outside of removing mouse support in Linux. Its just that when terminals enable mouse they typically move the regular mouse functions behind a hotkey that you must hold down.

I'll try recompiling the prealpha without the debugging on and see if that helps fix things up. Check the prealpha folder and there should be a new build. It might be that it crashes when debugging is on so please let me
know if it still crashes after you try the new build.

I removed some half-finished Python code just in case that was causing
crashing and I added a ton of Mystic-DOS functions over the past couple of days. Still alot more to do though, the "easy" parts of Mystic-DOS are done.

Definately the debugging on seems to make those stop working, I am on the new A43 from today and able to run all the same apps on A43 as I do with A42.

Thank you for checking this! =D

Yeah it does seem that way. Well great at least we're moving towards figuring out the cause of the issue. I'll have to experiment more with the settings I'm using for debug vs what I am using for release to see if I can find exactly what it is.

This should fix the "first SSH connection when in daemon mode fails" issue (hopefully).

It should also introduce the POLL option for mis which will eventually
replace FIDOPOLL so feel free to experiment with its goodness.

The impact on speed to send traffic to nodes using MIS POLL is amazing!

Awesome I am glad to hear it! There seem to be a couple wonky display issues with the "currently connected" window but hopefully I can get those resolved shortly. They don't seem to affect any actual data transmission or the standard log window.

Now that we have this done, next up lets get that error tracking and crash/hold/deactivate system done! In an odd scenario, I am having trouble deciding what I want to call the stanza in the .INI file for that :)

    Intentions are:

Track failed connections (outbound) and demote from crash to hold
    Track failed authentications
Track last interaction date/time (done) and deactivate after X days

But back to the day stanza... Something like that
    [EchoNodeGovernor]

But I don't like that. Any suggestions?

It does fix the first SSH connection fails. But now it seems every connection made creates a zombie process. I just connected twice to the daemon mode MIS, and it happens immediately.

That process is part of the open node, it will go away when the user logs
off. Do a grep before during and after logout and you'll see it go from non-existant, to existing, to being removed.

I used to know more details about it but its been so long now I can't
remember the circumstances surrounding it. Maybe I can clean it up but
really its just a display issue almost.
