Is the ESCAPE hotkey only supposed to work in a standard menu?

While modding my doors menu(s) - which are setup for lightbar/grid, I have tried using the ESC key to go to a previous menu (using CTRL-L on the hotkey brings up the list, and I select ESCAPE, obviously), but while the actual escape key doesn't work, I had to manually type the word "escape", which is definitely what I don't want.

So instead I had to use "Q" in order for it to be a one key deal.

Yes, those named hotkeys are for standard menus. Grid menus have an escape event.
