From bl00d@21:1/162 to All on Saturday, June 24, 2017 19:15:41

Since I run mis -d, I don't usually get to see what is happening with the
bbs. I can run nodespy to check the nodes, I also us tail -f piped through
some grep filters to monitor binkd and tossing.

But, I was running nodespy today and I was thinking, why couldn't nodespy be
a one stop shop for all that? Maybe have multiple screens on nodespy that
would show the BBS activity. Last callers, last binkd connections, or binkd status, maybe even logs?

    Food for thought :)

I think this is a great idea and I agree the Linux side could use a little more in the way of interacting with their BBS.

Before I work on monitoring more though, I think I need to replace MIS with MIS2 so that I only have to focus on monitoring one thing. I am actively working on that lately. A34 had a LOT of MIS2 stability testing, for example, and I hope it to be rock solid stable now.

As we speak the Linux version of MIS2 is going through a DDoS attack its got 32 connections per second hitting it on a 50 node BBS and its not flinching. Approaching 100,000 connections total and counting. Gotta love how well Linux handles this too compared to Windows...

Anyway once I get MIS2 on point I want to work on the UI and monitoring and your idea is great!

expanding nodespy with mis2 is the way to go.

    Awesome to hear!

I stopped the DDoS on MIS2 today after 500,000 connections without any crashes, memory leaks, or ghosted nodes. I even stopped and started and stopped and started the server during the DDoS a few times just before I stopped the test... and still no ghost users or anything. Seems completely stable to me.

Its time to build on MIS2 a bit more. I still need to figure out the fate of the country blocking and blacklist DNS, both of which last time I looked did not have IPV6 compatible services. :(

    g00r00,

I agree. I host my servers professionally, and still they lack IPv6. I know it's coming, but my
Opinion is take the low hanging fruit first and worry about IPv6 later.

Who knows how long before it's widely adopted.

**not saying don't do it, but use time for easy updates, and things that add immediate benefits. IPv6 isn't going to add benefit to many people.

Not telling you what to do but giving you an opinion which you didn't ask

I use the country and auto blocking. The DNSBL somehow added my sprint cell phone to it so I turned it off.

But yet, Mystic and Ubuntu running ufw basically make me have no downtime at all.

I reboot servers 3 times a day and have no issues whatsoever.

Your mystic even as is, for Linux, is rock solid. Far more than sbbs, and others. I know you can expand it, but it's great now.

I will absolutely try to keep those services, but its not entirely up to me.

If the services do not support IPV6 then it can't be supported. At least not in this current state. I'll have to figure out a different way to implement it.

Its just the third party country and blacklist DNS services that do not support IPV6 (at least the last time I looked) so that leaves me with no way to implement those services in an IPV6 server. I need to come up with another solution.

Yes. Would be even better if the monitoring could be done remotely over the network. I run my BBS headless, so I have to run nodespy over a SSH session. Would be nice to have a "BBS console" on the Windows desktop.

And I've been an IPv6 native for 6 years, though IPv6 at home is temporarily offline (with IPv4 running on emergency backups), due to a botched migration of my connection to the new broadband network. :/

Certainly worth keeping the country blocking, etc for IPv4, I think that's where the majority of issues are going to be for a while. IPv6 is also harder to "brute force", because there are _so_ many unused addresses in each range (like almost 2^64 on home networks).

    I'll give it anyway:

    https://www.wholesaleinternet.net

You can get a server, unmanaged, for as low as about 15 a month.

Install Linux, mate, xrdp, and run virtualbox for all of your systems.

Most plans give you 5 external ips.

Well I don't think I would use that to run the BBS on, but I would use it for compiling and development on Pi. I am currently using an older Pi and I have been meaning to upgrade to the 3 to speed things up. Working on the older models can be a bit painful at times.
