• Using Legacy DOS Apps with Mystic

From Avenger@21:1/999 to All on Friday, May 12, 2017 16:43:46
    Hello all,

Once again I apologize in advance for my newbie questions (I should probably just add a formal apology to my auto sig lol).

I starting to mess around with the prelogin menu and realized a lot of these old legacy apps won't run in a Windows 7 shell, even in 32bit. Some of them are door games but others are quirky little executables like generating random snl jack handy quotes to display and other odds and ends.

I originally had some of the stuff setup in DOSBOX with PCBOARD but the documentation on PCBOARD is so limited and no one seems to use it anymore so
I ended up switching to Mystic.

I know Mystic won't run in DOS so I was thinking of trying XP mode or VMWare but before I go too far shooting in the dark I thought I'd check with you
    guys.

Just looking for a kick in the right direction. Maybe some search terms for workarounds I can research. Thanks!

You don't need to apologize. We have all been there. :)

I starting to mess around with the prelogin menu and realized a lot of these old legacy apps won't run in a Windows 7 shell, even in 32bit.

Is Win 7 32 bit? Or are you just running Mystic 32 bit? Even running Mystic
32 bit on a 64 bit system won't allow you to run 16 bit programs. Windows 64 bit systems no longer support anything less than 32 bit programs.

I originally had some of the stuff setup in DOSBOX with PCBOARD but the documentation on PCBOARD is so limited and no one seems to use it
anymore so I ended up switching to Mystic.

I'm running Win10 64 bit here, so I can't run any of the old legacy programs
on this system. I do have DOSBOX set up, but I wasn't able to get it to run very well with any type of doors. When trying to run doors with DOSBOX and Doorway, the ANSI was messed up, along with not being very stable. I ended up setting up another networked computer with Linux Ubuntu on it, and set up a telnet connection from one system to the other. Under Ubuntu, I can run
DosEMU to be able to use online 16 bit doors.

I don't know if that really answers your question or not...

I do ALL my development and run Mystic, WildCat! BBS (DOS flavor) etc. in a Windows XP Virtual Machine (called Windows XP Mode or Virtual XP Mode) including all those timeless 16-bit DOS utilities (as I imagine Doors would, too). It's a freebie from Microsoft though MS wants you to have Win 7 Pro or Ultimate to use it, it CAN be done under Home Premium! The only stuff I've found that will not run is older utilities that attempt to set full screen mode, bad for the VM! I use List.com and PC-Write (DOS) every day {chuckle}. Holler if ya need ...

Most anything should run under Windows 7 32 bit. What is the error exactly? Runtime error 200? If so, check out: http://www.pcmicro.com/elebbs/faq/rte200.html

Sounds about right. On both DOSBOX and some super awesome "Why aren't using Linux?" feature of Linux. I was trying to avoid opening a new can, but I
should probably bite the bullet and learn Linux. At least for this
    application.

I don't know if that really answers your question or not...

    Yes, very helpful. Thank you!

Very nice. This was one of the things I was gonna try but wasn't sure if I'd
    be wasting my time.

No error per se. The one program I tried is supposed to generate a new txt
file every time it's run but when I run it nothing happens. I had just
finished installing Win7 32bit and it was really late so I just assumed it wasn't the answer. I'll try some other programs and see what happens. Thanks!

Why not try it in a VM (AKA Virtual Machine)? then you don't need anymore hardware to try it. Makes it much easier to get rid of if you don't like it
and try another version as well, till you find one you like or can work with. Win10 does now have bash and a more Linux like setup if you load the options.
I have them, but rarely use Win10 and don't use the options fully yet. This
is being sent via ssh from a RetroPie setup to Pixel on my main BBS/DMZ
system on another raspberry pi. The systems themselves run less than 10W generally, not sure about the 1.5T external USB drive on the DMZ.
...I need to update to A33 here ;(
