I got this working. So does mrc.sh have to be running in the background
    at all times?

I'm running windows and my mrc_client is active in the background at all times. I'd would think, the same goes for whatever OS your using if you want your board users to be able the chat with other boards linked to mRC in real time. Personally, here in windows I just hide both the mrc_client and mrc_server using a utility call trayit. So, they sit active in the utility tray.

Maybe somebody using Linux can jump in if there is away to hide the
    mrc_client?

If you run the application/script from the command line, just add a " &" (without the quotes) to the end of the command used to run it - this sends the command to the background.
