Thanks for the insight (I'm a network engineer too). In $workplace we will be replacing our Cisco gear for new stuff. What it will be remains to be seen as we need to go through an RFP.
In the past I have managed a Cisco IP Contact Center Enterprise. State of the art, super redundant except when it wasn't... I ended up with a direct connection to the voice devs (bypassing our supplier and TAC altogether). Interesting times... But reading your story and thinking about my own experiences sometimes makes me want to spend the rest of my working days driving a train or bus ;)
