• Fidonet Zone 3 BACKBONE.NA

From nathanael@21:4/123 to All on Tuesday, March 05, 2019 21:16:29
I've just finished configuring FidoNet on my board and messages are flowing
in. However, in the initial setup, all I could find was a BACKBONE.NA for Zone 1 to import.

But it turns out Zone 3's echoarea list is significantly different -- many
more echoes (and some missing). Can anyone point me to a Zone 3 BACKBONE list that mutil can import?

And is there anyway to automatically clear out echoes I've got configured
    that aren't available?

    You won't find one list that covers all. Take a look at these;

    http://www.angelfire.com/ny3/scoutinglife/a2g.html http://www.angelfire.com/ny3/scoutinglife/g2l.html http://www.angelfire.com/ny3/scoutinglife/m2r.html http://www.angelfire.com/ny3/scoutinglife/s2z.html

Combined with the various .NA files including the backbone.na it should
    get you close.

For the rest you can google search for the echo you're interested in,
    sometimes you'll get a description.

For the rest you'll just have to make it up.

Was afraid someone would say that. So I %AVAILed an AREAFIX list and I'm
going through and adding in descriptions and otherwise massaging it into BACKBONE.NA format so I can import it with MUTIL. But there are 430 echoes,
so it's gonna take a while.

Or will MUTIL properly handle the format as-is?

Anyone interested in a copy of the results when I'm done?

I think you'll have to put it in .NA format.

But i'll give you a hint. Of the 430+ echo's there are really only around
200 that are active or have any messages in them.

I just set my BBS to auto add any new echos and I check in every day or
so and set up the auto added echos.

Saves setting up 200+ emptydead echo's. Unless you want them there...

Not really. The problem is figuring out in advance which ones they are.

I think you'll have to put it in .NA format.

    Done.

Now I'm pretty new at this. I've already imported the Zone 1 BACKBONE.NA. and basically want to replace everything with Zone 3. So I'm thinking

    1) Unlink all my current echoes.
    2) Delete all my current FidoNet echoes.
    3) Import the Zone 3 BACKBONE.NA file I created.
    4) Re-link the echoes.

Would there be any issues to the above? I presume I'll lose the messages I've already gotten, but I can just do a rescan.

Z3 doesn't have such a list as such. There are a huge number of echo's with many being dead.

I don't know what format you're speaking of so probably not.

With Mystic you can set it up to automatically create new areas when it receives messages for them, and Mystic can also configure all of the security related stuff and put them into the correct group (if you use groups) and automatically configure it to export to the hub.

You really don't have to do anything at all but turn that stuff on and enable every single echo available, then let Mystic do the rest.

A lot of dead echos, a lot with only auto postings of rules once or twice a month, and a small number of active ones. But there are a few good echos in there. Echos I've found worthwhile include:

    IPV6
BINKD (mostly quiet, but ask a support question and someone will answer)
MYSTIC (but FSXnet is better S/N nowadays)
SYNCHRONET and SYNC_SYSOPS (gated from DOVEnet)
LINUX and TUXPOWER (occasional activity, usually good S/N when it happens) PASCAL has had rare activity (but always on topic)

Others have mentioned COOKING, but that's not in my areas of interest, so I can't comment.

MYSTIC was at one point the most active echo on FidoNet before we moved shop over to FSX. Its pretty dead now but I guess is still useful because if you post there you will get a response.

Totally forgot about PASCAL. PASCAL and QUICKBAS (I think that was the tag?) were my lifelines back when I was an early teenager. I'll have to sub to IPV6 someday I don't think I've ever been subbed to that!

I never had BBS access back then (that happened in my early 20s), but yeah they'd have been great echos in those days

to sub to IPV6 someday I don't think I've ever been subbed to that!

I've been running native IPv6 since 2011 and tunnelled on and off as far back as 2000, so it kinda fitted. Suffice to say that getting IPv6 working on Windows 2000 or Linux 2.2.x kernels was *ahem* interesting (but I succeeded!), the 2.2.x IPv6 patches had an interesting bug in that the default route didn't work(!). You had to put in a route to 2000::/3 to get out to the rest of the IPv6 Internet. :) There was very little app support back then, and it was a case of mostly ping6 or checking out the dancing turtle on kame.net, which only dances if you connect via IPv6 (it's still there!) There's one or two zealots in the echo, but it's not too bad.
