I'm not surprised that the Twitter model developed from that. With FB,
you would have had to accept each and every friend request. In Twitter,
the follower, just adds themselves.

Heh, I'm on the entire 26... but I only troll facebook for a few specific things like BBS and Apple II groups.... oh not to mention the uninspiring adverts... its amazing how badly people try and sell stuff...

Unless someone pops up from one of these groups, I just ignore everyone :) I don't even bother with family except for the nearest and dearest...

popularity precisely because it was invite-only and thus "family free".

Regarding the ads, try the mobile interface - m.facebook.com. It's a
super scaled-down version of the regular pages, but NO ads. Even the
photos people post are reduced in size. But there is an option to temporarily blow up a pic for details.

My 39 are mostly relatives, real friends, and some local people I grew up
with. But none of them are "talkers" in the sense of communication like
we do in echomail. Any pictures they put up are devoid of any context!

Hence, I stopped adding anyone else. And that was over 10 years ago.

The original Fidonet PHOTO group embraced Facebook around year 2000 or so. The platform works quite well for that. But people stopped describing
their photos. Without context, it's just a flip-book of snapshots. I get that some people would just post and hope to fish for comments - akin to visiting someone's home and flipping through a photo album - until you
have a question. But I've reached my tolerance level for pictures of people's dinner plates and flowers!

Nothing to get excited about. The 39 is mostly relatives, a few other
people I grew up with, and recent people in my own neighborhood! NONE, of them ever post a message unless I ask a question first.

I am glad I discovered the mobile option: m.facebook.com It cuts out all
the ads. I can see if there are any PM's, and if not, leave. The whole
visit is done within 5 seconds. Only a few hundred bytes are exchanged.
