  • [ANSI] How my ANSI turned out

    Hopefully my ANSI posts okay over the network --
    even with text in front ofit.I
    previously talked about taking a picture, editing it
    in GIMP (includingtaking the background out
    , shrinking it down, and cartoonifying it
    ), thenusing manytools to create an ANSI
    of it.But then I ran into iss
    ues where only the 256 color / UTF-
    8 version of itlooked good in color.
    So I went through the laborious process of trying to figure
    out how to makeit look decent in 16 colors
    (and only 8 background colors, so a
    s to avoidblinking / having to use iCE co
    lors).Given those issues,
    I did things like making my hair blond. Any
    way, lots ofwork, and I think
    it turned out reasonably well. I have no idea what
    I'dpossibly _do_ with it
    , but it was still a fun project, and somethin
    gproductive-ish to do while listening to somethin
    g.Anyway, here it is

    I had to log onto Agency to have a look since Golded and BBBS don't support ansi messages at all. I see a lot of this..

    Came up fine over here, not mangled at all.

    Yay! Thanks for the report. I had posted it a couple of times locally on my
    BBS (and had odd things happen that I fixed), but wondered if it'd get
    mangled when translated to other BBSs.

    Yeah, I figured it'd be like that for some BBSs, but, hey, that's what the ANSI tag is for.

    It's too bad there wasn't some kind of standard for using colour in messages but there has never been any consensus on a method we could all use.

    Ansi tends to be the best option from what I have seen in BBSs I have tried.

    ANSI seems to be the best supported, with many BBSs and offline readers supporting ANSI.

    of colors would be awfully nice, but I know that won't happen.

    Though I think that's one of my, "it'll take forever, but I like the idea" concepts for my own BBS.

    Hey, nice job. The lady has a nice rack.

    Hah! Bit crass, but the dress (and some cleanup in GIMP) do work well.

    But I'm glad it turned out well, especially in 16 colors. It took me a while
    to figure out colors and shading that looked decent enough in comparison to
    the 256 color original.

    Have you ever played around with RIP? It never seemed to catch on.

    The only thing I ever used with it back in the day was LORD. I downloaded a copy of RIPtel and checked out Black Flag which is a telnet'able all RIP board. Black Flag was included in the address book w/ RIPtel.

    Have you ever played around with RIP? It never seemed to catch on.

    I had some basic customized menus for my old BBS, but I think that's as far
    as I got. I don't recall getting callers who used it, but I kinda assume someone tried it.

    Does RIPscrip even do that many colors, though?

    Also, I'm still not entirely sure on the value -- at some point you may as
    well have a ReactJS front end to the BBS or something. ANSI, but with more colors, still has a retro feel.

    Mind you, not that I'm _against_ a ReactJS front end for a BBS; I'm just not sure what'd make it more BBS and less random internet site.

    But I'm not against the idea of using RIP graphics, though I imagine I'd have to change BBS software again.

    Huh. Interesting. I wonder how it would've looked if I posted the 79-column version I had been mostly working on.

    I switched to 80 columns (with the last one being black) because Mystic
    wrapped it, so each row was a further column to the left.

    It's likely supported or not hard to impliment in current software. It might not work well with all the retro software that is still widely used.

    My own software supports UTF-8 at least in some way, it probably needs work.

    I think Mystic is likely to fully support UTF-8 at some point. It supports it now but I think it still stores messages in CP437.

    It might be best to accommodate the standard configurations of sites that
    use sychronet's webby thing. A messy display doesn't convince lurkers to stick around and use the technology since it looks broken.

    my BBS, but anything with text in it (rather than just a converted picture) seems like it'd be rather a pain to implement.

    Makes sense. I assume that some of the telnet client software supports it,
    too, though then it'd be a matter of telling them that UTF8 is preferred. I suppose I'd probably just make Mystic ask, rather than guess.

    (Okay, it almost certainly isn't, but I can dream, right? And maybe other technologies will come down the pipe, too.)

    Hmm. Perhaps I need to hand-edit the ANSI (rather than Moebius, which is what
    I finished it in), and add some hard returns at 79 or 78, and maybe then it'd look good everywhere? *shrug*.

    Does RIPscrip even do that many colors, though?

    I thought it was based on 640x480x256 although I could be wildly off the mark there.... I got demo's of setting it up a couple of times, but never did anything about it.

    Try 79 or 78 tests.

    Hmm. Perhaps I need to hand-edit the ANSI (rather than Moebius, which is what I finished it in), and add some hard returns at 79 or 78, and
    maybe then it'd look good everywhere? *shrug*.

    Or try loading it into, and saving from a different editor :) Also try posting without a screen clear added to the top.

    I don't actually know, though I think I was biased by my bargain-basement screens I made that were on-theme for Storm BBS, that were not colorful, and had three different fonts (four if you count the fall-back ASCII prompt) on
    the main menu.

    Anyway, looking it up, kwasstuff.altervista.org/RIP claims "640x350x16
    colors" -- at least for earlier versions. There was more in v3.0.

    RIPscrip 3.0 included a bunch of color options and screen sizes. I imagine I was not running 3.0. I don't really recall, though. I'd assume that, if a BBS did RIP graphics now, 3.0 would probably work.

    But I'm already beyond my knowledge anyway. I don't know what BBS packages support RIP, nor what terminal programs.

    I suppose I could try breaking out TheDraw on my server.

    Still seems kinda wrong, though, that over-30-year-old technology is this buggy.

    I get why, but still weird.
