Yep :) There's a few folks here that have followed a similar pathway. The

I have to admit, that my first approach was with a C64, which I still love to this day.
Then came the XT. No HD, Monochrome display. Speaker sound, which drove my mother crazy, since the machine was in our living room. At that time my
father gave some printed DOS manual that I read in a matter of hours and experimented with all the commands explained there, making batch files and so.

Oh, that was a fun time.

Yeap, if I have to say why I am here, is because message networks. I remember having so much fun reading messages, exchanging some knowledge, or just chating.

Yeah I like chatting in echomail as I can come and read it as/when ready vs
IRC style chats that come and go and unless you are there you can tend to
miss things. So to be able to post / read when I am ready to do so does suit
me better. I also think the fact that we're all spread out across the globe makes for a delayed store/forward style of messaging as a easier option for all.

Right now it's coming up 1.22pm on my Wednesday, I'm just having lunch and checking echos :)

thing is with near real time comms over the internet even FTN chatter can be rather quick if both 'chatters' are online at the same time. I've had a
delayed 1-2 min chat between both sides of the world via echomail and often wondered at that fact given back in the 90s it would be more like 4-5 days if not more depending on where the people were based.

It's disheartening seeing my kids who feel compelled to answer *immediately* to a text message or social media message, completely losing sight of what's happening here, now, in the moment.

Part of the beauty of BBSing for me, is the long-form nature of echomail,
and the ability to create a response, reflect on a message packet, and
change or delete a message if desired.

I used to love traveling by plane with a laptop and a QWK reader; I'd set
the new scan date to 2 weeks prior and download a monster packet, including messages I'd already read or had skimmed over.

I remember up to three days, but often faster. In Germany there was a Fido-like network called MausNet. AFAIK all BBS systems called a central hub at least twice a day and maximum mail delivery time was 24h.

How fast did Usenet mails travel around the globe in the 90s?

How fast did Usenet mails travel around the globe in the 90s?

From '90 through '97 I ran a BBS called The Lab BBS. I pulled down Usenet and Fidonet through a Ku satellite dish from a compnay called Planet Connect. If
I remember correctly the feed from the dish to my network ran at 115k. I had
a 128k ISDN line that passed that feed out to our local 1:116/xxx Fidonet group. In '96 I went too work for a local ISP a friend of mine started and we used that same satellite connection to provide a news server for the ISP. It was a couple of days for mail to flow through the Fidonet feed. I suppose
that was due to nodes holding mail until late at night when the phone rates went down.

Same here. The only downside I see at times is that people infer emotion or tone when the author has not intended his/her written post to be intended
    that way.
