You don't have to put links for all tracks, just the ones you know or
have the time to add the links :) If the files/tracks are in your BBS, perhaps you can automate the procedure with a script and add a "local" link to your BBS.

Ahh that's genius! I will do that, as all the music is available on my BBS,
so a blanket link to the BBS would be an easy win.

After adding the links, you should consider to add tags also :) hahahaha

    HAHAHA very true.

Thank you, I'm very pleased with it and glad it's getting listeners, I like
the fact that chiptunes covers most genres of music, so there's something for everyone, whether you're specifically wanting to hear "chiptunes" or just
some nice easy listening music, it's a win both ways.

Feel free to ask me questions, I'm still learning it all but it's getting there.

The software intrigues me. I'm wondering if I could use it for totalfm.nz but
I would need to suss how I could feed what I currently feed to my icecast server and I'm picking feed that instead to the dj software as a 'live'
input? Not 100% sure on that...

I haven't played with the "live" aspect of it yet, however you can set up
live DJ's auth so they can cast to it, it uses IceCast or ShoutCast depending on what you choose to install on the server end, and then you can use either
a webDJ client, bundled with AzuraCast or you can perhaps stream to it via something like Mixxx.

This is how I intend to allow people to have their own DJ slot on qUAntUm RaDio! so they can produce a more personal show as it were.

I think AzuraCast is very much more powerful than I can understand yet, but
I'm looking up all the things I want to do with it to see how achievable it will be, so far it looks like it covers all bases well... not bad for free =)

    Hi Ogg

I generally don't have a problem streaming 96kbps radio through
iTunes on the XP pc, but yours wasn't coming through.

I have just enabled two extra streams for the radio, a 96kbps stream and a 64kbps stream.

Please can you let me know what you think and if either of those are better
for you. Thanks for the suggestion too.

I don't know what different mime type for MP3 means. But I can play .mp3 with iTunes and VLC on PC #1 no problem. Spotify plays well too.

I'll try rolling Firefox back to 52.8.0 on PC #1. That version in PC #2
on a T60 which I am using as I am writing this message, WORKS.

Interestingly.. A popular local radio station in my area plays OK when launched on my PC #2 that has FF 52.8.0. But it doesn't play on PC #1

I've been looking at this today and when I am listening to music from my
radio station, either using VLC or the web version to stream the music, as
soon as I stop the playback, and/or close the application that is listening
to the stream, the bandwidth that I can see on the server instantly drops and the link appears to terminate.

How can I replicate this on my end to see what you're seeing?

In other news.. I just noticed that another pc (a Win7 laptop, also

Is this after (trying to) listen to my radio station? Or was this PC not
trying to listen just happened to show the same symptoms of not idling when idle?

I think that as long as a device has a network connection it will always send and receive some amount of data because it has to advertise it's presence on the network to allow for routing of traffic to work etc. If your bandwidth is getting eaten up by a pc that is idling, I would probably just disconnect the network connection or disable the wifi if it's on wifi until you wish to use

NOT download). I think that machine contributed to my using up my
meager 5GB last month faster than I thought. But I digress...

When I expect a pc to be idle, it really should be idle.

It'd be nice if there were an easy and obvious way to temporarily blacklist
all internet traffic from a computer, and then easily whitelist only the requests you want.

But even Windows takes a while to beat into shape on that idea, much less all the random other programs that want to check for updates.

    Hello Meatlotion!

One other thing I wanted to mention. Your site continues to feed a
stream even after I close the browser tab or the whole browser..

I've been looking at this today and when I am listening to music from my radio station, either using VLC or the web version to stream the music, as soon as I stop the playback, and/or close the application that is
listening to the stream, the bandwidth that I can see on the server instantly drops and the link appears to terminate.

Could I be witnessing the continued download of the playlist file? You
said that the playlist can be downloaded manually, and loaded in VLC. I
am wondering if the regular www online player you are using triggers a
feed of the playlist and that is what I am experiencing on my meager 3Mbps
DL speed? People with 100+Mbps DL feeds probably don't notice anything
since the transfer is fast and already completed within seconds?

How can I replicate this on my end to see what you're seeing?

    Slow down the DL connection?

In other news.. I just noticed that another pc (a Win7 laptop, also
parked at home) was using a steady trickle of data UP and DOWN even when
    sitting idle...

Is this after (trying to) listen to my radio station? Or was this PC not trying to listen just happened to show the same symptoms of not idling
    when idle?

Well.. It could be a remnant behaviour of using your radio on it since I always just put the Win7 laptop into hibernate and never really shutdown Windows, but I doubt it. Maybe it is Firefox calling the mother ship for updates. Any automated checks/updates on a mobile connection are not a
    good idea.

I think that as long as a device has a network connection it will always send and receive some amount of data because it has to advertise it's presence on the network to allow for routing of traffic to work etc.

Yes, I can understand the Win7 pc advertising its presence on the mobile hotspot LAN, but there shouldn't be any blatant advertising to the
    outside.

If your bandwidth is getting eaten up by a pc that is idling, I would probably just disconnect the network connection or disable the wifi if
it's on wifi until you wish to use it again.

Yes, I need to get into the habit of doing that. Initally, I was just closing the lid and letting the pc go into hibernate. I have the Win7
laptop next to my XP laptop so that if something doesn't work in XP, I
just turn to the Win7 pc.

Sometimes it is handy to have something on the Win7 pc stay onscreen for reference while I am working on the XP pc. (Kind of like a double-monitor setup). I have to get into the habit of disabling the wifi on the Win7 as soon as I am done with it.

Limited data at 5GB/mo sucks. There is simply too much greed in this data techonology.

This is what I had at the start of my new billing cycle:

    http://pics.rsh.ru/img/luckyjun32020_wzx68qkp.png

    Today's report is this:

    http://pics.rsh.ru/img/luckyjun62020_fztoub2p.jpg

So.. at about 200MB per day sofar, I'm clocking too high. I have to keep
my average at or below 170MB/DAY Even at 64kbps, Quantum Radio is a
    luxury at about 29MB/HOUR. :(

Is it any wonder that I fetch my data with DSL and bring it home?

I really doubt it's the playlist file, this file is 134 bytes and contains
    just this in it;

    [playlist]
    File1=icyx://radio.erb.pw/radio/8000/radio.mp3
    Title1=qUAntUm RaDio! - 128kbps MP3
    Length1=-1

    NumberOfEntries=1
    Version=2

Even on a very limited connection this would take less than a second to download, all it does is instruct a player that uses the playlist where to
get the stream from. Once downloaded it shouldn't download it again.

If I watch the bandwidth on myserver before, during and after I connect to listen to a stream, I can see the bandwidth change in real time. Before I connect it's just normal network chatter at ~1kbps give or take, when I
connect and play the stream at 64kbps it fluctuates between 5-8KiB/s and as soon as i press the stop button the bandwidth usage goes back to ~1kbps.

This is really confusing me now as you're obviously having some issue, but
for the love of it I cannot fathom why or how it's the radio causing it. Without any real log info or anything reproducable either I can't even go to the developers to ask for their aid.

I don't know what to suggest.

Possibly easier to implement at your firewall... doesn't catch stuff thats using regular open ports much though...

It'd be nice if there were an easy and obvious way to temporarily blacklist all internet traffic from a computer, and then easily
whitelist only the requests you want.

The early versions of ZoneAlarm did that. When you first installed it, it would block ALL traffic going anywhere. You then would get 40,000 pop-ups
from your system tray asking: "Do you want to allow IEXPLORE.EXE to access the internet?"

You would then have to hit Yes or No for each and every program that was requesting internet access. This was fine for things you knew were running
like Internet Explorer, MSN Messenger or ICQ.

For other things that seemed cryptic like random DLL files asking for network access, people would deny access and then suddenly your computer could no longer access the internet because you just blocked all DNS requests.

They quickly moved from the block all & allowlist approach to the (now) more common allow all & blocklist, in an effort to become more user friendly.

You may be able to configure the built-in Windows firewall in a similar fashion, but I haven't played with it.

Yeah, that seems to fail the "easy and obvious" qualification that I had.

Certainly, some amount of it is easy enough (e.g., much of what might happen with windows stuff in the background is something that you can avoid by
setting the connection as a metered connection), but a lot of it would
require doing firewall things like you're talking about. Generally there's a way, it's just a matter of how painful to get there.

Yeah, the DMCA stuff has been a bit extreme lately. It tends to go in cycles where labels get super clingy over their property being used and then back
off when they figure out it is actually good for exposure.

Honestly, copyright is so stinking broken now. Expect another extension in
the next year or so because Steamboat Willie is almost up for public domain
and we KNOW Disney isn't going to let that junk slide.

I'm glad that there are artists who own the rights to their own music and let things like qUAntUm RaDio use their music. Home-based recording studios, Bandcamp, and other services are slowly making labels obsolete.

    Keep up the great work!

I was in disbelief that they let items go into the public domain again. I had talked about it as an important aspect to the 2016 race that _no one_ talked about, and this irritated me, because it was something that was likely to happen over the next four years.

And, oddly, I'm fairly hopeful on them allowing Steamboat Willie into the public domain. It surprises me, these days, but I think they realized that
they can control things in a variety of other ways, thus the hassle of
another copyright extension wasn't worth it.

But I'm probably wrong. Still irritates me how the US Supreme Court so obviously misinterpreted the US constitution back in 1996.

I still wait for the time when the world gets copyright that advances science and arts by doing things like how Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back should
be entering the public domain around now. Maybe the US declining as a power will help that.
