I've been a bit quiet lately, had a few things on my mind. One of them being Covid 19... now there's a surprise.

The situation in New Zealand continues to worsen but not in an uncontrolled fashion. In fact I think our government is doing a good job and working to preempt some of the dramas facing other countries right now e.g. Italy. Time will tell.

If you're following along at home have a look at covid19.govt.nz for an idea
of what my country is up to. A new alert/level system started today which I think helps to communicate the level of severity and what people can expect
to be able to do (or not).

    Time for some zzz.

    Night all.

It is good to see these local government websites providing updated information
on a regular basis to keep people informed.

Here is the one local to us in Maryland: https://coronavirus.maryland.gov/

There is also a global site that was created locally at Johns Hopkins: https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html

That one is more on stats vs information on prevention, etc.

Very nice and informative website. Good communication and transparency is really helpful ...

The opinion of this outsider is that, while the US is not handling it as
bad as many would lead you to believe, New Zealand (and maybe Australia,
too) is a good example of how I wish we were handling it.

Italy (which had a very highly rated health care system) and China
(covering it up for over a month) are two examples of how not to handle it.

Hmm dunno about Italy, they didn't appear to get a lot of warning.. it just took off. One of their biggest problems is the bulk of their population is old,
so many many more cases require more and longer ICU time. Stories appear about
them having full units, someone dies, its one out, one in. Australia despite no being in such a bad situtation over all, also has quite an old population as
well. So I expect we'll see plenty of deaths here once it gets
    going.

Everyone has an older population in most developed countries. The US does

Thanks for the well wishes and condolences, really appreciated and have
passed them along to my wife who also says thank you :)

She flew up north today and I follow along with the kids two days later. Just prepping for the trip and supporting her from afar.

Got to sort dog kennels, rental car, flights are booked, gotta pack - sigh. :)

Anywhoo just wanted to acknowledge the community kindness and thank you all.

Hope you're all doing OK and not too stuck in the COVID crazy days.

Over here the country has pretty much reopened for business with no new cases in the last 17 days. Our borders remain closed though which is likely to be
the case for some time to come.

Well job application is now in, so waiting to see how that goes. I guess if I make it to the interview stage I should know in the next couple of week or so.

Got hit by an unplanned powercut last night, it nuked the box I use to play back music on my LPFM station. Been trying to bring it back but no joy.

Luckily I have a spare but it will take some time to rebuild so that's next
    on my list.

Asides that just supporting family and particularly my wife. She's not as
upset as often now about her mums passing but it still hits her at times and it's those unexpected waves of emotion that can catch us both out. Her
dealing with it and me supporting her. It's stuff that just takes time but is mentally very exhausting we're both finding.

Life in New Zealand is fairly normal as we have COVID-19 under control with
no signs of community transmission here for I think 80+ days now. There are reports of 1-2 cases most days from folks in managed isolation coming in from overseas and being picked up at the border.

New Zealand borders remain closed to all overseas visitors and have been for
a few months now. Only returning New Zealanders are allowed back, and flights bookings inbound are managed and limited in numbers. Everyone coming in has
to spend 14 days in managed isolation and gets tested day 3 and 12.

So yeah, that's us at the mo.

    Best, Paul

We did manage to flatten the curve here but the caronavirus is still a thing that is happening here. Still seeing new cases and deaths although the rate seems to be slowing.

That is prudent. The caronavirus still wants to take off here. Schools here will be reopening next month as usual in BC. I sure hope that doesn't prove
to be a mistake and that those in charge have their eyes open and are ready
to do whatever needs to be done to keep kids and everyone as safe as possible in these times.

Have been working with Solaris in NET 2 to review a bunch of nodes that are inactive or having issues polling. I expect to prune more nodes from NET 2 in the coming week once we reach out via email to sysops.

It's a bit meh to see some drop off like this but I'd rather have an accurate and up to date nodelist and not have HUBs tossing mail and holding it for systems who have shuttered but not let anyone helping in the admin space know.

In some cases it's clear a BBS is still running but polling it is not working with session errors being reported. In those cases we're reaching out to the sysops concerned to see if we can resolve the issue. I sorted one system out
by those means in the last 24 hours.

My thanks to Deon, Dan, Todd and Ruben for their continued support and assistance in running the network. It's very much appreciated.

Friday, we had some good news. My wife's scans don't show any signs of remaining cancer so far, so they are cautiously optimistic.

However, last night I got a message from my mom that my dad had fallen at
home and had to be taken to the hospital. had hit the arm that broke and had the rod in it. Then later, she told me they had found a blood clot in his lung, and it appears the cancer has spread to his brain.

So, I'm trying to prepare myself mentally for the fact that it doesn't look like my father will be around much longer.

I lost my wife to cancer 5 years ago. If there is an option of a hospice house, I would recommend it. Things... change. You will know when it is time.

My father spent a fair amount of time having tests done, but he was really already cooked when they figured out what was going on. He spent a lot of time at home, already on hefty pain relief which was a little interesting he wasn't always compos mentis. However one day he decided it was time to head off to the hospice, he only lasted a day or so after that.

When my grandmother died, my mother got to see her mother's family for the first time in about 30 years in the funeral.

It was kind of weird because they had been very close in the past and they drifted appart due to certain circumpstances... I think the funeral got them back together quite tightly. They are still in touch to this day since then.

    I'm sure that's the case.

I remember probably about 25 years ago, my dad talked a guy that was closing down his company in Lake Charles, Louisiana into starting up a small
operation here in Houston, doing a similar operation, specializing in small jobs no one else wanted to deal with because of varioys reasons.

He agreed, and offered one of his guys from Lake Charles a chance to move
here to work at the new company instead of the layoff package. He accepted.

So it was the three of us working there, and we got one of my dad's cousins
to help us with getting equipment fixed and set-up.

At the end of the day, the four of us are sitting in the office talking. My dad and his cousin are talking about people and places and the usual, "Do you remeber.." update type things, going back about a decade. It had been about that long since they saw each other.

They lived about a mile away from each other.

He passed Monday morning. My sister told me it was peaceful.

I went Saturday to see him. He had had a stroke while being transported home, so he couldn't talk, but he was alert and knew I was there.

I went back Sunday, and things were somewhat of a madhouse. The people from Hospice hadn't delivered some things yet. One of my brothers, the one that I shared the video a while back that promotes local businesses in theirvarea,
has a friend he went to school with that owns a medical supply company. After
a phone call to him, he met my brother and my dad's sister, who is a nurse,
at his shop, and opened it up for them and let us have whatever we neeedec0d for my dad. Dad was in a lot if discomfort, and the cancer was spreading so fast. you couldn't touch him anywhere without hurting him. We got everything done to get him comfortable and set up to where hopefully we wouldn't have to move him. I stayed until he looked to be resting comfortably.

Then Monday, morning while I was feeding my dogs, my brother called to let me know my father was gone.

We knew it was going to be quick, but were figuring a week or so. not 3 days.

I'm still in shock I'm sure. 36 days from learning he had cancer to him
    being gone.

From an older person's perspective, all I can tell you is that death doesn't inspire the same concerns as when I wore a younger man's clothes; over time,
as we experience the growth and love of our children/grandchildren, fear of
the inevitable is acquiesced by the memories for which we'd gladly pay a reaper's toll.

I'm sure your father felt the same way: death is but a pittance for having

    Stay strong my friend.

    Hi all.

I just thought I'd pen an update to let you know whats been happening in my world lately.

Family still keeping me busy. My eldest daughter (forgive me if I am
repeating this I loose track now...) was unwell and after a second stay/visit to the hospital had her gall bladder taken out. She's spent the last 7 days with us at home and today we're taking her back to her apartment. So that's been a busy time caring for her.

My youngest son called us yesterday morning (my Saturday... as it's Sunday
here as I write this) to say he was also in the hospital emergency department with breathing issues. So we shot down again to the hospital and sat with him while tests etc were run. He is on a course of antibiotics and they think
it's bad bronchitis brought on by the crappy student flat he is living in.

Anywhoo he was discharged and after 5 hours in the hospital we cam home
again. I feel like were a frequent flyer there and I don't want to be.

Work has been busy, we've had several changes in senior management roles. The rest of us are wondering what changes are coming next. Somewhat stressful but you just keep working and doing the best job you can.

I am heading up to the North Island next weekend to see my parents. My mum
will be 79 and I have three days there that overlap her birthday. She's somewhat frail these days so I look forward to seeing her but worry about her health. My Dad is 78 and although way more active/fitter etc. is still none
the the less also coming towards 79 etc.. so not getting any younger too.

I'm more aware of the passage of time these days and the loss some of the people I know/work with etc. feel as their parents pass away :(

Because it's winter here I have not been sitting in the study where I am writing this update as much as I do in summer. The room is a cold one and despite running a heater (if I choose to) is not the nicest to be in when outside it 3-5c ... so as a result I have not felt as inclined to jump on the computer and do BBS stuff. I've tended to save that for weekends and
sometimes other times too when I can do stuff at my own pace and not feel
like I am juggling other stuff I need to.

Been working on NET 1 nodes and delisting a few as I want to ensure the nodelist is accurate with nodes that are indeed active vs inactive for 30+ days. It takes some time but the OCD side of me likes keeping things tidy in terms of network ops and I think it's a good signal to send to all that the network is indeed operating etc etc. My thanks as always to Todd, Deon, Dan
and Ruben for their help with the NETs they run - thanks guys!

Work at Agency is on the backfoot as I focus on fsxNet stuff but I need to
work on some mods and doors that stopped working when I shifted to Linux. So that's on my to-do too.

Been watching Disney+ and really enjoying all the Marvel stuff. Just finished Loki and had enjoyed Falcon and Winter Solider before that and also WandaVision. If you have not watched them I suggest give them a go.

Humm.... that's about it for now. I'd best get back to the admin stuff. Will post an update later of removals and an addition.

    Best wishes.

    Hello Avon!

On 18 Jul 2021, Avon said the following...
stay/visit to the hospital had her gall bladder taken out. She's spent
the last 7 days with us at home and today we're taking her back to her apartment.

That's good! Hoping she'll continue to be fine.

My youngest son called us yesterday morning (my Saturday... as it's
Sunday here as I write this) to say he was also in the hospital
emergency department with breathing issues. So we shot down again to the

    Oh my...

antibiotics and they think it's bad bronchitis brought on by the crappy student flat he is living in.

    :-O

Hoping the antibiotics will cure this then! (Is there any way to better the student flat situation? Can an air cleaner or anything like that help? I imagine moving might not be a realistic option...)

Work has been busy, we've had several changes in senior management
roles. The rest of us are wondering what changes are coming next.

    Oh yes... I recognize that.

Our entire organization has been "re-done" in the sense that it has collected all IT on the campuses into one central organization (on paper, that is).

Needless to say, bringing together hundreds of people from all over the place is a daunting task, and we've yet to see much of the anticipated benefits.

Adding organizational consultants into the mix -- because no one really knew where to start with any of this -- hasn't been very fruitful; it has mostly just introduced parallel working structures, conflicting with the ones already
present. Now all these structures have to sync with each other, taking even more time that could have been spent on actual work instead.

Many people are still wondering exactly what their working tasks should be in the new organization, and the fact that large parts of the new management don't have clue either makes it even more of a limbo. Of course there are some people thinking that everything is fine and dandy -- they got their new positions in the new structures and could finally justify their existence, more or less.

Did I mention that they are adding even more administration staff everywhere, and recruiting people to departments/units where they don't really belong? Kind of short-circuiting the "usual" placement of people with those positions. Often for a single task or something that really ought to be a shared task between several people rather than following the "one person, one system" mantra (which I though people were aiming to get away from).

We'll see how it goes, but so far I can't say I'm very impressed with the progress. It's been two very stressful years so far and more or less no added benefits -- just a big mess...

I'm more aware of the passage of time these days and the loss some of the people I know/work with etc. feel as their parents pass away :(

Those thoughts are coming to my mind more often now than they used to, too... :-/

    Best wishes.

    Back at you! :)

    Best regards
    Zip

Yeah she seems to be on the mend, spent 7 nights with us and went home on Sunday last week...

The manager of the tenancy business that looks after his flat has come around and I understand a number of issues have been raised and the kids hope they will be addressed... us parents are keeping a watching brief :)

Thanks good sir. It will be nice to see them but a little bittersweet also I hate goodbyes :(

    Hope you're doing well too.

OK, "updates" sounds ominous, but it's just me talking about stuff I'm
doing, ha. Noitced fsxNet was a little "holiday light" in terms of
messages so thought I'd toss one in!

Came back from So Cal (Riverside, to be precise) after US turkey-day and
was pretty wiped from travel, relatives, gluttony, etc. My parents are
getting pretty frail, hard to see them like this, but they are still
mobile and reasonably ailment free, so that's good.

My wife's step-dad has stage 4 cancer, last time I saw him he had a
cough, now it looks like it won't be much longer. He's on an experimental (hail-mary) treatment, so who knows. He's a good, kind man and really
sucks to see people suffer. We had a good, long chat about his childhood.
Just want to be the one who listens right now.

I started a new BBS game project, this time in Lua! I typically flame out
in the home stretch (always thinking -- no one cares, it's dumb, who will
play it, etc.) but given it's a good excuse to learn more programming,
I'm optimistic I'll finish this one! It's called "Dungeon Dice" and it's
meant a procedural dungeon crawl, a roguelike, where movement is
determined by a dice roll, you just pick the direction and the encounters resolve as you meander toward the exit and hope you survive. Of course,
only Talisman sysops will be able to run it (Lua) but want to make it a
add-on for this awesome BBS system.

I also closed down "Sysop Help Desk" on Discord. Too many things to manage/promote, and since Apam has a Matrix channel for Talisman support, that's good enough for me!

OH and one more thing, I created a new community game server with an
automated signup from my BBS. Anyone is welcome to join, and I'm adding a
few more games per week. You can also launch MRC directly from your own
BBS, if you don't run it locally.

    That's it, thanks for reading!

Thanks for posting! I read it.. :D sorry to hear about your partner's
    step father. cancer really sucks.

With regards to your dungeon crawling game in lua, at one time i wrote a
door called lured. it was basically a door interface that was meant to be compatible with talisman lua mods. (or magicka, can't remember)

Of course I'm not sure what I did with it, and it's not nearly updated
enough, but something like that might be cool to have..

I've been taking a little break from talisman by working on my OS
project. Yeah, I can't put it down... but today I finally got the
    ethernet driver working!!!

Of course, now there's something wrong in my TCP/IP stack - who knows
what. I can't connect to the web server from outside the OS, but I did
manage to connect to a synchronet IRC server (I have an irc client)
    however, nothing beyond connecting..

Oh well, that's for another day. The ethernet driver was a head
scratcher, turns out i didn't enable PCI bus mastering, once i toggled
that bit it was magical (except that there was another bug in
transmitting packets, but that was a silly typo.)

Well, at least I know my memory manager wasn't to blame after all.

I'm running Synchronet in "game server" mode, which has an MRC add-on.
SBBS's Game Server mode allows you to pass an source IP-whitelisted user
via RLOGIN (without a password) and launch the xtrn program seamlessly
    from Talisman.

If you come to my BBS and launch MRC from the main menu, you'll see how
it works. As there's no MRC for Talisman (yet?) or a generic door-type
MRC program, this works pretty well...

Yeah, I'd do that, but I can take a direct flight from Frankfurt to LAX, and that seems worth it, to me.
