That's the namesake of my handle! I'm a Bay Area dude, and his story is so fascinating.
My wife's family came out to visit a few years ago, and we booked "Emperor Norton's Fantastic San Francisco Time Machine"
http://emperornortontour.com
Met a man in Union Square dressed as the Emperor, who regaled us with the story
of his life, then took us on a walking tour through Union Square and North Beach. We saw Lotta's fountain and heard the story of Luisa Tetrazzini performing there, heard lots of stories of the waterfront, the clock in the St.
Francis hotel, saw photos of what it looked like during the gold rush, saw the only Frank Lloyd Wright building in SF, were surprised by a flock of wild parrots introduced into SF years ago, and went into one of the tunnels that used to lead from saloons to the waterfront. Watch your drink!
Half of the people who noticed us bowed and said "good day, Emperor", and the other half had no idea what was going on.
A great afternoon, even to someone who'd spent most of his life in SF.
