• QWK Question

    From The Millionaire@21:1/183 to g00r00 on Tuesday, March 03, 2020 08:48:07
    Hi g00r00. How about having an option for a list of QWK subs to be imported instead of typing them all in manually? Would save time with multiple message bases or only enter one and the rest get written as they come in to your system sort of like how echomail works. Same idea.

    You can import a .NA file with mutil using the Import_FIDONET.NA function. It won't configure everything you need in the setup but saves you entering all the
    areas by hand.

    You'll need to create a .NA to import. A bit of cut 'n paste from dove-net.txt would work for dove-net.

    There is a Mystic sub in FSX but people talk about Mys here all the time as well. Quite appropriate here.

    -=>Richard Miles<=-
    -=>Captain Obvious<=-
    -=>bbs.shadowscope.com<=-

    I think TM is talking about QWK networks. You can import a 'SUBS.TXT" file, which has all of the QWK conference information. The only issue with SUBS.TXT is that it also sets security levels and other things you may not want set, but you can minimise the work needed to fix that by using the template area and cloning options.

    The really tedious part that I find is setting up the QWK conference numbers on the server. That is an annoying fiddly process for a leaf node. It's also a similarly tedious process for the hub when setting static conference numbers for the QWK areas. A nice feature for hubs would also be to be able to take a list of QWK conference numbers from another hub and add a fixed amount (usually a multiple of 1000) to them for local use as a second hub.

    It would be nice if these processes could be shortened somewhat.

    You can do that on Synchronet but not Mystic. The only option I know of with Mystic is the Import_FIDONET.NA option of mutil. It does most of what you need.
    You still have to enter the QWK hub and area #'s.

    It would be nice if these processes could be shortened somewhat.

    I've often thought that would be nice but there is a fair bit of variablility in there. Thankfully you don't normally get more than 20 - 30 areas to setup in
    most nets.. :)

    True, provided the QWK network provides a *.NA file.

    Yep.

    And 20 or 30 is enough to do my head in, with a repetitive process like that, where more time is spent navigating menus than actually entering useful data. Remember, you're talking to someone known to spend 3 hours writing a program to avoid 3 hours of tedious hand calculation. ;) And I now know why.
