I have no idea where to post this, but I'll try here. I'm looking alternative ways to check echomail and netmail messages on my BBS without having to login the BBS all the time. When I started using Mystic, I wanted to mainly check messages on the BBS itself as this was part of the fun at the time, now I'm wondering what other options are out there?

Would my best option be looking into offline mail? I've looked at mutlimail, its a nice tool but I still need to login to the BBS to get the offline mail.

    Thanks,
    matt // eggy

    Hello eggy,

    the offline mail.

I use GoldED myself. It's a very full featured editor. It reads and writes directly to your message base. No login required, just fire up gedlnx and read and reply to messages. There are other editors too, like timEd and a newer one called GossipED. I've haven't tried that one myself. It supports UTF-8 where golded doesn't so would be usefull to folks using UTF-8 for their language.

GoldED's interface is similar to but not the same as Mystic's index reader.

    Ttyl :-),

Mystic has a build in NNTP server. You can use a NNTP reader to read and post messages back to Mystic.

This might be a bit silly, but where can I find these editors? I'm interested in checking the newer ones which support UTF-8..

You could use FTP to upload and download QWK packets, or you could use a NNTP newsreader. In any case, you still have to log in, but the login can be hidden in the configuration. Similarly, FTP can be scripted, so you don't see the login phases.

If you're on your BBS machine you can just open up Mystic's reader directly and bypass the login.

If you're in Windows for example make a "reader.bat" or something and put
    this in it:

    mystic -ueggy -pMyPassword -Xmailread

Then you can just type reader to open up your messages directly.

You can also setup SSH or RLOGIN and set your start menu to something that opens up the reader, so when you SSH into yout BBS it instantly opens up the reader without any login or menu navigation.

It's not silly at all. FTN stuff can be quite hard to find these days.
Gossiped can be found here. It has UTF-8 support.

Thanks for the tip, I like this idea the best as I can easily script this to
to my liking on the BBS system itself.

I think we should probably maneuver into the mystic sub (and I think we've already started discussing this) but is there a better way to handle this
other than storing passwords on disk?

If it's Synchronet or Mystic, NNTP is already there. I think he's running Mystic.

I'm running Mystic BBS on my primary BBS, and I've enabled its built in NNTP server. But my email client is acting funny about posting replies (Thunderbird). I'm also working on tweaking news group settings to hopefully make it more useful to me.

OK, cool. I haven't used Mystic's NNTP support. I have done NNTP with Synchronet and found it worked well, but wasn't what I wanted, because last read pointers and subscriptions can't be easily synchronised with QWK, etc.

Mental blank, was it soup or gigo you were using to gate echos?

hmm I use thunderbird, although I'm using INN and my server is pretty empty having never gotten a gateway running. But T'bird hasn't had any drama although authentication was an initial issue...

I used gigo back in the day. :)
