Seems to be dragging on and on here in Singapore. Mostly quieter than normal, certainly my commute from Malaysia<->Singapore is a lot faster with less people at the border.
My company just instituted rotation, half the company works from home
one week, the other half in office. Then swap around, it is my turn to
WFH next week. So at least I have that going for me.
Hope all is well out there.
No issues here so far. Early response and strong quarantine measures
have meant that the number of cases in Australia is still only a
handful.

Our CFO just returned from Australia, we commented how little it has spread there, really is a good example what fast response can achieve. With the recent fires and floods, you guys deserve a break, a plague is last thing you need!

handful. However, there are reports that trade and tourism have been significantly affected by the outbreak.
Many companies are moving in that direction, it'll be interesting to see if business continuity is improved in a real-world situation because of it.
Same thing in Greece too. Many cancellations from abroad and the Summer tourist season seems to be one of the worst ever.

Definitely not a good year for tourism. :(
Another global issue is that because Chinese manufacturing has basically stopped, trade is down and we're going to see a lot of delays in the supply of various consumer goods.

The current winning idea is to go to Pamplona and run with the bulls and re-enact Hemingway novels :P
For us is the opposite... the US issues travel warnings for terrorist attacks and instability in the region :)
This is also a big problem... perhaps we might see, the prices going up, in many products due to low quantities available. On the other hand a "ban" like this on Chinese products maybe do some good to local/domestic factories.

I love how in the era of affordable drones, long distance vehicles,
etc., we don't have any photo or video of the flat earth. Seems like an easily provable thing.
Oh, and that vaccine link has been debunked many times by reputable scientists. The original "study" that claimed that vaccines caused
autism was flawed and the researcher was discredited and deregistered.
The problem in the States is many of those local/domestic factories is over there looking for the cheapest labor for maximum profit. As we hear from The Boss...they ain't comin' back.
Long term, it could seriously affect the Chinese economy as major corporations look to add redundancy to their supply chain by sourcing
some manufacturing from other countries, such as India, to prevent a similar incident in the future from taking out their entire supply chain as COVID19 has done.
I'm curious how this will play out. It's not like Apple can just find

I guess the devil's advocate position is that relying on collaboration tools is a "least-common denominator", and remote and local people can collaborate on a level playing field, instead of corporate policies and initiatives being set and discussed while on smoke breaks outside the loading dock.

I joined private sector right as the "IM people from across the room" phenomenon started. It's pretty bizarre. That coupled with corporations
putting everyone in open floor plans to save money...at some point youbegin
to wonder what the point of stuffing people into these buildings is in the first place. I, for one, tend to get a lot more done when I work from homeor

In my office we IM so that we won't disturb other people with our

People are wearing headphones to drown out the noises of others.
They're not benefiting from the shared space where we could all shout
at each other. They go to pains to tune it out.
Boomers gonna boom. People of a certain mindset, in certain industries, have a notion of what it means to "go to work". Of course you go to the office - that's where the photocopier and fax machine and file cabinets are. That's where the other people are, to whom you must speak in
person in order to exchange information. That's what "work" looks like, even if it doesn't *have* to anymore.
They *know* that remote work is possible, now more than ever, but they can't get past this idea that got baked into them decades ago at their first job, or watching their parents leave for work in the morning.
There is nothing about my job that I can't do from home. The commute is
a waste
of time and energy. When I work from home, I get started earlier, and
I get more done because I'm more comfortable and have fewer
distractions. We don't need all of the buildings and office space, but
the decision makers and workforce need to catch up with that idea.
A common fear is that people will slack off if they work from home. I don't get it. Just fire them, then.

Preach, brother.
In tech support, there's the reason they called you, and there's the
real thing they need fixing. Mostly, it's due to a lack of
understanding or training that's causing something about their systems
to drive them crazy.
At one of my recent gigs, we supplanted a 24/7 outsourced helpdesk with 8/5 local teams, commandeered project huddle spaces, outfitted them
with couches, put ESPN on the big monitor, put accessories in bins and made a mini Genius bar in our offices. People could walk in, get a
coffee and *talk* to people who knew the systems. We never mentioned filing tickets, and we ended up solving the "other" problems, too. Got
a 100% csat rate, and I had happy techs who liked giving a shit and helping people instead of punching tickets.
