How are you all dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak?

Seems to be dragging on and on here in Singapore. Mostly quieter than normal, certainly my commute from Malaysia<->Singapore is a lot faster with less
    people at the border.

My company just instituted rotation, half the company works from home one
week, the other half in office. Then swap around, it is my turn to WFH next week. So at least I have that going for me.

How are you all dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak?

I was actually supposed to go to Singapore this week but a surgical procedure that I have to get is taking precedence. I'm bummed because I really wanted
to go, but I'll be able to go in the future. I was warned that since there
are no straight shot flights from San Francisco, I'd probably have to stop
off somewhere and we'd be monitoring the outbreak situation to pick the best route. Considering that, I'm happy postponing the trip.

Hope all is well out there.

No issues here so far. Early response and strong quarantine measures have meant that the number of cases in Australia is still only a handful. However, there are reports that trade and tourism have been significantly affected by the outbreak.

Thanks ryan. Actually it is not too bad here, people are making the most of 'working from home' company policy and with large drop in tourists it is a
bit quiet, which means shorter queues! But most places are still open and operating for now, their bottom line must be affected though.

Hope to see you out here soon, good luck with the operation.

Yeah, we don't need to import trouble, got enough of our own. ;)

I'm hoping that the vaccine is developed by late 2022, because I am likely to head overseas by then - Looking at Hong Kong in November 2022, if all goes

Unrelated to Coronavirus, I'm waiting for my company to implement an
expected hoteling plan for our office. There's a possibility we'll hot-desk when we move into a new building. Since we already use our cell phones only and everyone has a laptop, it won't be that much of an issue - and people already Slack me instead of walking over.

We could just as easily work from home, a coffee shop, a beach with a
tethered cell phone or from the office.

Many companies are moving in that direction, it'll be interesting to see if business continuity is improved in a real-world situation because of it.

Do you think this is the straw which broke the camel's back? Many people are doing it...but you still have people/managers who can't be trusted to do
their work. For that matter...why even have managers...other than to give
your kids/relatives a job because they are worthless human beings if forced
to not use their contacts to cover for this?

Don't mean to come off sounding stupid...but even where I work in retail...I see people goofing off all day to escape doing anything and managers getting their jobs because of a spouse/relative who likes them.

If you observation is correct...I applaud it with a standing ovation.

We had the additional issue that the COVID19 outbreak was immediately preceded by the severe fires, which affected many truist areas. Definitely not a good year for tourism. :(

Another global issue is that because Chinese manufacturing has basically stopped, trade is down and we're going to see a lot of delays in the supply of various consumer goods.

Long term, it could seriously affect the Chinese economy as major corporations look to add redundancy to their supply chain by sourcing some manufacturing from other countries, such as India, to prevent a similar incident in the future from taking out their entire supply chain as COVID19 has done.

If you are bold enough, you may get some very good prices this year ;) Personally i don't fear this virus... i think it's another flue virus
and if you are healthy enough you don't have a problem. If someone is
not in good shape, with other medical issues, he should take care and protect him self.

Yeah, I and one of the other guys on the trip has asthma so that may rule
    this year out :/

I love how in the era of affordable drones, long distance vehicles, etc., we don't have any photo or video of the flat earth. Seems like an easily

Oh, and that vaccine link has been debunked many times by reputable scientists.

The problem in the States is many of those local/domestic factories is over there looking for the cheapest labor for maximum profit. As we hear from The Boss...they ain't comin' back.

You never know. From what i hear, chinese factories will be closed for several days and i dont think that the situation will normalize soon. It may even get worse. So this situation may bring work and money to smaller companies that chose to stay in their country.

Long term, it could seriously affect the Chinese economy as major corporations look to add redundancy to their supply chain by sourcing
some manufacturing from other countries, such as India, to prevent a similar incident in the future from taking out their entire supply chain as COVID19 has done.

True. The conspiracy theorists say that this virus perhaps was a warning or an attack to the Chinese economy. Will see...

I'm curious how this will play out. It's not like Apple can just find
some people in the US to start building phones overnight. But
    interesting for sure.

Perhaps big and advanced companies have no other ways to produce their
products but for smaller and less advanced products it's a very good opportunity. For example in Greece we even import screws and nails from China, even if there are some factories that can produce them here. With all that's happening now days they have more work and got more employees. ;)

We could just as easily work from home, a coffee shop, a beach with a tethered cell phone or from the office.

Many companies are moving in that direction, it'll be interesting to see

The east coast of the US isn't moving in that direction as fast. Actually, hardly at all. I do like the idea and it should work out great for the non-slacker workers. It would certainly save me two hours of driving each day.

The issue here is many old schoolers are stuck where they want physical in person meetings all the time. Much of this is due to the fact that many people
have no clue how to use the mute button on their phone when not talking on a conference call much less use a video streaming feed.

I'm still waiting for the population to catch up to where we are in technology.. :)

If the choice is between a screwup and a conspiracy, go with the screwup. :) COVID19 was one of those things that emerges from time to time, like bird flu, SARS and swine flu before it. The stuff up is the lack of redundancy in the global supply chain, with everyone sourding products from China.

As an aside, it is highly likely that I did catch swine flu in 2009. At least one local who I used to see regularly at my gym had swine flu, and it took him out for weeks. For me, it was very mild, but I am very resistant to flu viruses. I rarely get the flu and if I do, it's a pale imitation of what others get. COVID19, being a coronavirus is probably more closely related to the common cold, which I do get regularly, and much the same as most people, so if I do catch that one, it's probably goinf to slow me down a bit more than the various flu viruses did.

Yep...with 12 kids at a birthday party for his kid. Too bad he wasn't a physicist who experimented with black holes. May these same people who experiment as well. ;)

The problem in the States is many of those local/domestic factories is
over there looking for the cheapest labor for maximum profit. As we hear
from The Boss...they ain't comin' back.

You never know. From what i hear, chinese factories will be closed for several
days and i dont think that the situation will normalize soon. It may
    even get
worse. So this situation may bring work and money to smaller companies
    that
chose to stay in their country.

Apple, who has the majority of their product assembly in China, had to issue an
updated earnings guidence to investors as they both had to close their own stores and the assembly plants are also closed which both of course hurts sales
since Apple doesn't really keep products in warehouses for long.

Maybe if Coronavirus scares people into staying home. I noticed 8x8 now
has free HD videoconferencing; bet that'll come in handy.

The media has been doing a great job at scaring people to drive up viewership. Not to minimize the problem, but we really don't need news stories like "3 people being tested in Maryland for Coronavirus". Not (3) people having it, but just being tested.

It is more dangerous walking around in Baltimore City at night than the chances
of getting the virus here. BTW, last night (2) people were shot and killed in
the city. That is a daily occurance and regularly ignored.

I'm fine with working remote for awhile, though.. :) We have O365/Teams for video if only people knew how to use basic technology.

See...I can be right ONCE in a while. ;)

Found this in my homesteading email this morning talking about hand
    sanitizers:

Here’s what you’ll need for this one:

10 drops of lavender essential oil
30 drops of tea tree oil
    1 tablespoon of vodka
1/4 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil
8 ounces of aloe vera gel

    Here’s how to make it:

Mix the Vitamin E oil with the essential oils in a bowl or container.
Add the remaining ingredients and stir together well.
Be sure to shake the solution before each use.

Look at the 3rd ingredient. HTH can I do that when I use it for making pie crust and as an antiseptic for my throat? Do I take 1 swig...add a few drops
& keep taking bigger swigs until I might have 1 TBL? If I have other drunks around he taking swigs as well...do I hope they catch something & die...so
that I have enough Vodka to use for this??? Can I just give them straight rubbing alcohol to drink? Would Everclear work just as well??? Decisions...decisions!

I went from an old-school culture where people drove company cars to meet in

I guess the devil's advocate position is that relying on collaboration tools is a "least-common denominator", and remote and local people can collaborate on a level playing field, instead of corporate policies and initiatives
being set and discussed while on smoke breaks outside the loading dock.

I went from an old-school culture where people drove company cars to
meet in a conference room, to a modern culture where people IM others
from across the room. Waiting for the pendulum to swing back to normal where IM and collaboration tools are an enhancement to remote work, not
    a replacement for face-to-face interaction.

I joined private sector right as the "IM people from across the room" phenomenon started. It's pretty bizarre. That coupled with corporations
putting everyone in open floor plans to save money...at some point you begin
to wonder what the point of stuffing people into these buildings is in the first place. I, for one, tend to get a lot more done when I work from home or on the road in a hotel room.

Yeah. There's something to be said for culture, though. I think a lot of company culture will get lost if we all end up working remote. I'm fine with that, though. :)

I'd rather spend more time being near my family and loved ones, even if it's just a proximity thing, than spending most of my waking hours in an office somewhere.

Probably should land somewhere in between depending on the circumstances. Also depends on the audience as there is still a large population that have not caught up to where technology is today.

Using the best tools for the particular situation is a safe bet. Sometimes that is face to face in person.

It seems bizarre, but it makes a lot of sense.

In my office we IM so that we won't disturb other people with our chatter, and so we don't interrupt one another in the middle of a task. You get a message, you respond when you have a moment, not RIGHT NOW because I'm up in your fucking face.

People are wearing headphones to drown out the noises of others. They're not benefiting from the shared space where we could all shout at each other. They go to pains to tune it out.

putting everyone in open floor plans to save money...at some point you
    begin
to wonder what the point of stuffing people into these buildings is in the first place. I, for one, tend to get a lot more done when I work from home
    or

Boomers gonna boom. People of a certain mindset, in certain industries, have a notion of what it means to "go to work". Of course you go to the office - that's where the photocopier and fax machine and file cabinets are. That's where the other people are, to whom you must speak in person in order to exchange information. That's what "work" looks like, even if it doesn't *have* to anymore.

They *know* that remote work is possible, now more than ever, but they can't get past this idea that got baked into them decades ago at their first job, or watching their parents leave for work in the morning.

They like to see industrious worker bees, a showing of where the salaries go. This is especially true in something like IT, where your main product is the status quo. When everything's going fine, the higher-ups start to question that
big budget. Why are we spending all this money on staff? Doesn't this stuff "just work" now? Isn't it all in the cloud? "Well just look at all my staff, working away. Clearly they exist, and don't they look busy?"

There is nothing about my job that I can't do from home. The commute is a waste
of time and energy. When I work from home, I get started earlier, and I get more done because I'm more comfortable and have fewer distractions. We don't need all of the buildings and office space, but the decision makers and workforce need to catch up with that idea.

A common fear is that people will slack off if they work from home. I don't get
it. Just fire them, then. I have seen with my own two eyes that if someone doesn't want to do their job, dragging them into the office isn't the cure. They'll find a way to waste time, and they've got a whole internet to dick around on all day every day.

Yeah. There's something to be said for culture, though. I think a lot of company culture will get lost if we all end up working remote. I'm fine
    with

A lot of cultures, forums, and forms of interaction have risen and fallen over the years. It's okay to let them die when they've outlived their usefulness.

Also, we have a culture right here. I've known many of you for years, even if most of us have never been in the same room. The space in which we interact doesn't need to be physical.

Lastly, I apologize for saying "boomers" above, because I detest all of the (often inaccurate) intergenerational name-calling that goes on. It's a lazy jokey generalization, even if it's not always without merit.

    Preach, brother.

In tech support, there's the reason they called you, and there's the real thing they need fixing. Mostly, it's due to a lack of understanding or training that's causing something about their systems to drive them crazy.

At one of my recent gigs, we supplanted a 24/7 outsourced helpdesk with 8/5 local teams, commandeered project huddle spaces, outfitted them with
couches, put ESPN on the big monitor, put accessories in bins and made a
mini Genius bar in our offices. People could walk in, get a coffee and
*talk* to people who knew the systems. We never mentioned filing tickets,
and we ended up solving the "other" problems, too. Got a 100% csat rate, and
I had happy techs who liked giving a shit and helping people instead of punching tickets.

Before open offices, I could come to your desk, and we could have a conversation without disturbing my co-workers. Now that we're all working in converted meat slaughtering warehouses with Kombucha on tap and climbing walls, we need headphones and IM.

I'm being facetious here. Customer support is a big part of what I do, and face-to-face contact reveals so much more.

People are wearing headphones to drown out the noises of others.
They're not benefiting from the shared space where we could all shout

I wish Outlook would let you schedule in 10-15 minute increments. I'd love
to schedule time for quick chats in meeting room/huddle spaces to save my co-workers the conversation.

Managers want to look out on the floor from their mezzanine office,
straighten their tie, take a sip of coffee out of their company-branded mug and look down at an office space full of busy, industrious workers. In this day and age I've run into (mostly older, senior) management complaining
about empty parking lots and desks at 5pm, despite knowing these people are on-call and working a ton of hours when you add up all of the out-of-office work time.

They *know* that remote work is possible, now more than ever, but they can't get past this idea that got baked into them decades ago at their first job, or watching their parents leave for work in the morning.

the decision makers and workforce need to catch up with that idea.

I have more distractions at home, but with the lack of commute I net out
more productive time. With a little tuning I could be way more productive at home; I need to find a way to block out social networking and BBSing when no one's looking over my shoulder (another management benefit of open offices - people being able to see what you're (not) working on...)

A common fear is that people will slack off if they work from home. I don't get it. Just fire them, then.

Yep, slackers gonna slack, whether it's at home or in the office.

The trick is objective, goal-based management. If you can build a management framework where you manage by objective instead of being a cog in an operations group, it works well.

Yeah. There's something to be said for culture, though. I think a lot of company culture will get lost if we all end up working remote. I'm fine

There's a lot to be said of having an in-office day. My company has a satellite office 30 miles away and remote workers, but it's an understanding that everyone's in the office on Thursdays. Arbitrary choice of days, since it's the worst commute day of the year. It's nice getting the team together and knowing you could reach out to people.

Yes, lack of training, or sometimes "Mondayitis", like the university lecturer who didn't think to check that his PC was plugged in one Monday morning. Poor guy felt like a goose when I reached behind and "fixed" it. But all part of the service. :)

NP at all. Personally...I went to the eye/medical doctor last week. I'm in great health with no damage from HBP/diabetes to my eyes. When I mentioned
that I eat either/& canned/fresh fruit everyday...they were shocked that I've been doing that for a long time. Makes me feel great & believe it should help me stay well...since I haven't gotten a cold/flu for a while. Look at the
fruit the same way as birth control...you take it for a while & keep taking
it & you should be protected.
