Of course. I've been living with only some variant of Unix
    on my machine since 1992.

Yeah, I would love to have it as my only OS as well. It just rocks! :-)

Plus, posting the same thing, over and over, across multiple echos, isn't really "civil conversation" now is it.

Yes. Ubuntu is a good place to start. :) It will ask if you want to wipe your computer clean or boot side by side with Windows. There is no performance impact by having both installed at the same time.

True. But will all the hardware detect since the hardware is designed for Windows like Windows does?
In the olden days back around mid 2000’s I had hardware detection problems and some things wouldn’t work on Linux. I hope they fixed those bugs by now.

Things have improved, but are not as good as they could be. Dell makes great Linux machines. You (or anyone else) won't know the issues until you've tried it.

Also, as kindly as I can say it ... use a quality search engine like Duck
Duck Go or Google. Because unlike internet search, I (and many others) will laugh at you and other fun things. ;) Just fair warning. We tend to like
those who have made an effort to read documentation and learn what they can
    on their own.

Yeah but because of their unpopularity they are very expensive though.

If I recall right, if you like bleeding edge hardware, your support is going to
be a lottery. If you prefer stable hardware then you'll get a much better run.
It is nothing like the days of 70 trillion different eisa cards in use to try
    and detect though.

This machine only has linux on it. So does my laptop, my raspberry pi, and
my file server. I have one machine that runs OS/2 WARP 4, but only for my older DOS BBS, and it was also running on a linux machine for a while.

Yep, same here. Multiple machines including desktops, laptops,
RPi's, a file/backup server, and the BBS. All running Linux only.
Even my router is on an old PC running a router-distro (IPFire).
I do have one Windoze laptop that is provided to me by my employer
    for work-related stuff.

Probably not - I use Slack (might be an app for it) plus Photoshop

Photoshop and office were my showstoppers for Linux on my laptop. Photoshop runs pretty well in WINE, and I bought Office365 so I can use the web
versions if I need to in Linux.

There's not a really good cloud service for Windows and Linux that I've
found. Dropbox was good, but I only had 18 gb on it, and they've recently discontinued their Linux client (or did I misread that?)

GDrive has had a couple of OK clients, but they've been buggy.

Resilio Sync was nice, file sharing without the cloud.

I'm more concerned about having my data available cross-platform than my
    apps.

Work stuff is all on GDrive - since we have an educational domain
    we have UNLIMITED storage!

Well, I've gotten spoiled to Apple... :-) That's what we use at work - I
have a MacBook Air (thinking about upgrading to a MacBook Pro) and an iPad
that are work assigned - and my personal device is an iPhone, so all of my stuff is 'just there..." If it's not in iCloud then I have access in Google.
