Technically the kernel is a component of the operating system. The GNU utilities make up the rest.
Nah. Most systems people refer to the kernel as the operating
system; the rest is the "userspace" or distribution or similar.
But this is semantics and yeah, people can be fast and lose
with the nomenclature.
The GNU utilities certainly aren't ubiquitous (consider an
embedded system that boots directly into a single userspace
process, or perhaps into something like Busybox).
However, based on his question, I think he's asking for the source code
to everything, from boot loader to the graphical desktop, as though it were one monolithic distribution... which is a question that goes
nowhere fast.
