Have you got a copy of the q3la, log analyzer? I can google references to it, and installations putting out stats or demos. But can't find a download for it anywhere.

    Heads up message...

The map mxl_school is absolutely monstrous in size. Nice looking map too, but it requires a couple of boots full of memory. You'll need to allocate more hunkmegs to get it to load.

This can be done in the cfg file somehow if you work that one out let me now. Or by adding "+set com_hunkmegs 256" to the command line that starts your client.

After some looking into the q3la compile error, I have it compile and apparently running. However I ran into a problem I used to have, and have no idea how to fix.

The ioquake3 server isn't generating any log file. Despite have set

    seta g_log "/home/ioquake3/games.log"
    seta g_logSync "1"
    seta log_default "1"
    seta log_stat "1"

And the idea that it is meant to be generating a log anyway somewhere. There is
nothing, nada, zip. Hard to generate stats with no log.

    - Maps required to play the server.

    - Some extra skins and models.

    - Sadistics, anywhere else this would be Statistics.

Stats pages are there, thus far they're empty. We need to get a few battles in to get some in there. Everything else works, or is there for extra information.

    Enjoy! Spec.

    - Some extra skins and models.

I think I have the maps ready here but I'm not sure about the skins
and models. Is there a .pk3 for those?

Its a raft of .pk3 files stuck in a .zip file. They're all marvel skins actually. The extra model is Conni, who's needed for black widow and someone else, not sure who...

Seeing as .pk3 files are just renamed .zip files already, it should be possible
to merge them all into 1 .pk3 file but thats for another day.

    seta g_log "/home/ioquake3/games.log" seta g_logSync "1" seta log_default "1" seta log_stat "1"

Is `/home/ioquake3/` a directory that already exists, and is owned

Actually it wasn't... it was still owned by root. The log file ended up in /root/.q3a/home/games.log Strange place but I didn't find it until I went
    a "du -a |grep games"

Its been modified now so that ioquake is a user and owns all of that mess, so that games.log is closer to home. And I've made a link to the baseq3 dir where the .q3la binary is.

It would be a good thing if you can send files a bit more quickly if bandwidth is available. There will likely always be needed files..

The server rate appears to be a decimalised value of bytes. Increasing it from 8000 to 20000 gave me a transfer rate over LAN of some 20Kb/s however lifting it to 50000 has only got it doing ~30Kb/s so maybe its capped somewhere or in much larger numbers its not a linear progression.

Seems like it might be easier to install *nix 32, and run with the original pointreleases. ioquake seems ok, but I dunno, from the server side, there's a lot of problems I've never seen before, and precious little information.

    Hello Spectre,

If I start bots they fail to load properly and crash the server

I'm not sure about a quake 3 server, or really any game server but I have been thinking on (as poindexter FORTRAN) mentioned an openarea server. Openarena is completely free for anyone to use. It is one of the games I play from time to time. I like Quake 3 also, very much but folks need to own it to play.

There is also UrbanTerror. It started out as a Q3 mod but is now a stand alone game that uses a modified ioquake3 engine. It is also completely free and fun to play.

Assaultcube is also on my list. It is completely free and fun to play. It's not
related to Q3 although it might seem that way it has it's roots in the cube engine.

It's possible if you look at the way UrbanTerror works you can make Q3 work that way also but I'm not sure just how different they are.

It's possible I could look into an OA, UT or AC server myself at some point but
I have too much on my plate ATM.

Just some thoughts I needed to get out.. :)

advertise it like those MRC meetups. It might be you sitting on an empty

Thats not a bad idea, trying to get an idea of when others might be able to play was to see if we can massage a time that might work better for more players. Seems like the random factors are aligning against the Sophos box and the ID q3ded.

First up is the strange reason that the ID server has stopped cycling maps, and is in fact stuck at end of the first map.

Second up is an issue with Ubuntu 14.04 x32 in which it refuses access by telnet or ssh. The ports are open, initially putty will connect and ask for confirmation of the key, to which you answer yes, and the remote disconnects you there and then and forever after. UFW is disabled. IP tables policy is to accept everything, and there are no rules in place. (boggle)

I haven't gotten a round-tuit yet, but I'm going to have to keyboard and monitot the sophos box until I can get that sorted, and also see if I can't get
it map cycling via the console. In the mean time, I've opened up an extra port and both servers are available to any possible comparisons.

Soooooo we have ID q3ded on port 5000
    IOquake on port 29760

    Hello Spectre,

Is it my imagination or has the ID server got stuck and not rotating
    maps?

That seems to be the case.

I'm getting further. It looks like the game has just finished a map and is going to start up another, but it doesn't.

Got that sorted.... I had duplicate ip addresses which is what was stopping ssh/telnet, but oddly enough not q3. And the map rotation failure was a strange cropping in the map.cfg file, it cut all the right most characters off,
so no following map was set at all.

So now it should be flying, the botless ioquake on 27960 and with 2 bots ID server on 5000.

On my first try on port 5000 I did have a round with bots a few days ago. Since
then I can't seem to connect on port 5000. I just get awaiting challenge.. 1..
    2.. 3.. 4.. 5..

I can connect fine on the other one but don't see folks there often.

Hmm ok, let me check it out. I can only guess either sophos has fallen over or q3ded has.. No, its running locally, strange.. I did have to beat the router with a 2x4 let me check that again. Dunno, I've reset it.. I should find something more reliable.

My ISP saddled me with a TP-LINK Archer router. It appears to be a good boat anchor all sorts of things fail on it, it loses its www interface, the wifi stops accepting new connections...

    Hello Spectre,

The ioquake3 server isn't generating any log file. Despite have set

I know nothing about server setup so I have no ideas I can pass your
    way.

I had a quick look on the web and saw some server setup help at quake3world.com
    that might be helpfull.

There is a wiki at wiki.ioquake3.org that I am sure would be helpfull
    but it
seems to be down at the moment. I hope they can get it back online.

    Ttyl :-),

'Lemme know if you need any config files. I have a working Q3 server that I used to run and it was open for anyone to play on.

Alrighty, the old ID q3ded server seems fine and dandy with no hiccoughs so I think I'm going to leave that in play and take down the ioquake one. So that there are at least some functional bots to play with if you come looking for a game.

Al, you want a lot more maps in the rotation?

    Anyone else have further ideas?

Once I shutdown the ioquake server, I'll need to rejig the statistics files to look at the right log file.

Try it again, I've played with its config a little, and for giggles taken ioquake out for the moment.

Have to say I dont know any of these, do you have them somewhere? One of the others I used to have was flying plutonians.. Its taking a while for my memory to kick in on the ones I'm missing.

Do you have an ftp server or BBS or email where I can upload/send them?

A search on lvlworld.com will turn them up for you quickly also.

I haven't yet put them on the BBS but I have an ftp server you are welcome to look through at ftp://trmb.ca. Switch to the local directory, then to the doom,
quake, unreal or quake3 directories. IIRC those files are in there along with a bunch more.

I do like to have a round of doom or q3 from time to time.

Whether or not you want to to run a dedicated server is a choice you make I suppose. Perhaps you could bring it up from time to time if we come up with a time to play?

I might have a look at alternatives again, none of which seemed stable last ¨time around. I put a veriton back in business with x32 on it to run the old ¨ID linux binary. Maybe try another VM on sabretooth..

Strange, if I recall right, and I didn't mess with 1 or 2 for very long, I thought 2 was a rather sad beast.. each to their own as they say. I didn't ¨move into quake until the RIVA TNT chip set came along, so I got to look at ¨both pretty much at the same time. 1 seemed to play better to me. Never ¨played it multiplayer though.
