About a hundred blocks too far north. Hell's Kitchen is on the west side
in the 40s; 150th where I am is north Harlem. Further west, north of City College, is Sugar Hill (if you're familiar with e.g. "Rapper's Delight"
    by the Sugar Hill Gang).

Years back, in my area we used to have sysOp get togethers, as I am sure everyone else did also. We would meet at a bar if the sysOp's were of age and drink and make fun of users etc.. Even today there are a ton of us close to each other or within an hour to hour and half. Tenser, and Maskreet are
within a 1 hour raidius of me. I believe there are a few others also.. You don't think about it until you see the taglines and say dang this stuff is still pretty popular around here..

Yes I also met up with with fellow sysops back in the 90s when *(at that
time) there were more BBS up and running. Sadly in New Zealand I think
there's only a handful of us. While Sneaky is 2-3 hours up the road from me
and I know of another Fidonet system in Christchurch.. it's a bit of a
distance to travel... so if you are only 60 mins away from each other than that's grand.

In fairness, I'm in Massachusetts so often it can just as often
be more like three hours. :-)

One of the things that was really neat during the BBS heyday was
that it was so local. You could meet people in your area who used
many of the same systems that you did. That was kind of cool.

Oooooh I have some dodgy memories of UserGroup days.. used to be a lot of strange, and I mean strange people around. Some of them just didn't seem to get it (anything) either... A bit like a bunch of low grade morons... Still plenty of good times were had too... I have no idea where most of those people are now.

    This. So much this.

Back when I ran a dialup BBS, I was a node on the local Fidonet net as
well as a local "Fantasy and RPG-oriented" net called "PhantaNet." I
went to one of the PhantaNet gatherings and it was just bizarre; calling
some of these people "low-grade morons" is an insult to low-grade morons.

'Course, I was young and it was mildly social, so I went. At one of the meetings, things were running longer than expected, so I called my mom
(I was in high school at the time) to ask if I could stay longer; I'll
never forget that I was told to use the phone in the bedroom of the guy
who's house the meeting was at, and the dildo on the bedside table.

It was all very ... surreal.

THANK YOU!!! At least now I can honestly say I wasn't strange feeling that way!! I was in a great group from the Bronx, we did a lot, but there was only like 4 normal people in the group! I think I was 1 of them! The rest?!?!?
Hmmmm No comement.. LOL You are right though, good times were had by all.. Especially when I did a telecom demo by calling the groups BBS with the PResidents cell phone attached to a 1200baud modem on an Amiga 500 and was connected to the board for almost an hour! Mind you this was before unlimited plans in fact he paid I believe it was .69 cents a minute for that call! LOL
He wasn't happy when his bill came in...

LOL Love it.. That comment reminds me of a time when I had a few people over the house from the BBS and we were in my man cave (2nd floor bedroom) I had
all of my stuff setup and was testing a computer I had just picked up used
from an ad on CompuServe (That tells you how long ago this was). .Well here
we are drinking beer eating pizza and having a good old time. I turn this
thing on and it boots no problems (my first PC, I was a Commodore Head at the time) it boots into Dos 3.3 I think, we were going to upgrade it to Dos 5.0 which one of the guys brought with him and install Windows on it. I was all excited, after about 10 minutes the computer shuts down. I reboot and it
craps out in the middle of booting, I think if I weren't drunk the next thing that happened wouldn't have happened. I got pissed opened the windows and
threw it out the window into my Driveway! The case broke up, the motherboard split but that 5.25 floppy and 10 meg 5.25 HD were fine! Jeez!!
