Google 'ptt' - it's in Taiwan. Really cool graphical interface, honestly. But
    I think it's telnet only.

Has like, thousands of simultaneous users. Impressive.

Not sure about SSH, but yeah, they're pretty popular there because of the level of speech oppression that goes on over there.

I found the BBS, after Ryan said to me... tried to login with Netrunner and Syncterm, but even the login screen is garbled... they must use some strange encoding perhaps. Anybody has a suggestion?

PTT Bulletin Board System is the largest terminal-based bulletin board system based in Taiwan. It was founded by Yi-Chin Tu and other students from the National Taiwan University in 1995, and it is currently administrated by the Electronic BBS Research Society as a non-commercial and open-source BBS. I'm not sure of the exact codepage used, but it's definitely in Chinese. If
you could find out specifically which codepage it is, Syncterm will let you
use a tool to incorporate it into itself.

Yeah, they have a different emulation they use and of course its going to be non-latin language with probably a UTF-16 encoding since that is most
    efficient with Chinese.

I actually had a professor from a Chinese university contact me years back about making a Chinese version of Mystic BBS. But at the time I didn't have the time to commit to it. He explained some of the stuff to me about what they're doing but I forget most of it by now.

Use a terminal capable of supporting UTF-8, because a lot of content, including usernames is in Asian script languages (Chinese, Taiwanese, etc). You may get better results with plain old "telnet".

I've heard BBSes are actually still fairly popular and active in China, due to the Chinese government's policy of censorship and restricting their citizens' internet access.

I haven't used any Chinese BBSes though. I imagine they're probably in Chinese, which I don't read or speak.

BBSes are popular in China, but not all are BBSes as we know them. (In fact I've not heard of any like "ours" until that ptt topic cropped up.)

In China, "forums" are called BBSes, so most have a web interface (and probably
an app now - now that wifi is available on smart phones - it didnt used to be).

Yes, and there's the matter of the encoding. I did eventually see on the Wikipedia article that it uses an encoding called "Big5", which is common in China/Taiwan. The specs seem impressive. It certainly seems to have an integrated web forum. Wonder if it can be made to have other "classic" BBS features like FTN, QWK, doors, etc. :)

According to Wikipedia, the encoding is called "Big5", and is commonly used in the Chinese region.
