• Back to the BBS 6: The Demoscene

    Hi friends,

Well, I hope you are all rolling around now from eating too many
cakes and pies, and merry from all the booze of the seasonal festivities, however, I have one late present for you all: Back to the BBS, Part Six.

This episode covers the Demoscene, introduces you to what it is, and
interviews the legendary Jim 'Trixter' Leonard, Vegard 'Shady' Skefstad of
The Gathering / Crusaders Amiga demogroup, as well as Bill Hart from PCRetroTech and Rowan 'Cthulu' Lipkovitz. This vital part of where games, music, online/cyberculture all intertwined is a really important history lesson, that brings you all the way from the early 80's to the present day.

If you want to see a quick teaser trailer, head over to YouTube now!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yTJBuvgqsE

The official release will be once again a live premiere with me in the chat
and since many of you are on vacation, it would be lovely to have you along with me for the ride. I have plopped for 28th December at 12.15PM PST /
    3.15PM EST / 8.15PM GMT.

The URL for the premiere is https://youtu.be/cw81Kax_XG4

This truly has been a labour of love to put together, hundreds of hours to create, between this and part 7 which is coming hot on the heels of this

I really do appreciate all your support and contributions over the last
year and a half. As you may know, I've been quite ill during most of 2021
and that has slowed me down considerably this year.

There are two more parts left: music tracker scene (which is going to be
great, it's got Purple Motion and Skaven of The Future Crew, so automatically that makes it great, right?!), as well as Part 8 which covers off the ANSI
art scene. I might do one last hurrah as a sum-it-all-up part, but that's yet to be decided.

I hope you guys and gals enjoy it!

    Merry Christmas!
    Al

I've been mindful of how you're doing. I think it would be good to have some stuff to focus on that is fun to do when the mood takes and I suspect this doco is one of them :) All that said, take care good sir and I hope 2022 is kinder to you and you feel a bit better as the months roll along.

I hope you guys and gals enjoy it!

    Merry Christmas!

..and a happy new year to you Al :)

... I have one late present for you all: Back to the BBS, Part Six.

I've only just realised - yeah, I'm often slow on the uptake - that this is
NOT "BBS: The Documentary", but a brand new production pertaining to the contemporary BBS scene.

Well, hang me from the nearest gibbet if this isn't the best documentary I've seen for a very long time. Having an opportunity to see the sysops behind some of the best BBS systems was a rare treat indeed (The Bottomless Abyss is one
    of the best IMHO).

It took a while for the penny to drop, but I got there in the end.

Needless to say, superb work by all involved.

Heh, yeah, there aren't too many documentary series on BBSes ;) I reckon
there are probably a few others out there that didn't cotton on straight away that this is a brand-new, completely unrelated production. It has Jason
Scott's blessing, but we've only exchanged a couple of emails about it really.

Thank you very much for your kind words! I always feel a bit dirty asking for the favour, but if you can like the videos and subscribe to the channel, and then share the videos on social media or with anyone you think might like the content, I would be super appreciative. YouTube reckons that about 2% of the people that wach my videos actually subscribe, so it buries my videos based
on the alogrythm because of that. If you have 200,000 subs thats fine, but
I've got 2,500 hehe. I just want as many people to know about the BBS scene
as possible and this is my way of spreading it for the 21st century.

    Cheers,
    Al

Not at all Al, it's the least I can do.

    Consider it done.

hyjinx: loved the demoscene EP, you pulled out some great interviews!

Any thoughts around your next topic? I realize these must be exhasuting
to make as well, great job on keeping them coming!! As long as you make
them, I'll like, subscribe and share.

Yep, the next episode was atucally done in in tandem with the demoscene episode, but it became clear during post-process that it was just going to be too big, so I made the hard decision to chop it up into two parts, one demoscene, one music tracker scene. I took a bit of a hiatus over the xmas holiday and also focussed on other content on the channel which you may have seen in the last couple of weeks, but I'll be getting back to episode 7 soon, and I'm hopeful that it won't take that long to do since I kinda half-did the editing for it already, however I want to spend a bit of time getting the overlays together and I also want to find some more killer modules/S3Ms/XMs
etc that would be worthy of playback (I'm looking for suggestions for a top
    10 really!).

Regardless, the interviews are all done, the biggest names have to go to
Purple Motion and Skaven of The Future Crew, but CtRIX is also great, as is TDK. All in all, I'm really pleased with how the interviews came together.

There's a shit ton of other non 'Back to the BBS' material on the cards soon. Presently I'm putting together an episode to fit in with the infosec side of stuff that I dabble in. It's a hands on with NMAP episode, something a bit different for a change.

    Cheers,
    Al
