• Why did I choose to be a SysOp?

From McDoob@21:1/999 to All on Wednesday, December 08, 2021 06:53:31
    Hello. I'm McDoob.

Let me share a tiny portion of my story with you.

"Every time I look in the mirror...all these lines getting clearer"
    - Aerosmith

Like a lot of the people reading this message, I'm getting old...

I was born in the '70s (barely), and grew up in the '80s and '90s. I was in college before the turn of the century. But...

The entire school was stunned by the events of 9/11. I can still remember that day, just as well as I can remember my college girlfriend! (She was MUCH hotter than the flames that broke the towers. Redheads...)

Like almost anyone who can read this, a big reason I'm here is nostalgia. Honestly, my first memory is laughing at a screen that kept PRINTing "Fuck you!" and then GOTOing...well, I'm sure you get it...

All through life, I've been involved with computers. I've literally grown up with them. From that TRS-80 that I wrote my first code on, past the Commodore Era, and the 80x86 era, AND the Pentium era...I was there. It's very possible that I've either owned or been provided with (Thank you, Dad!) every
'personal' computer that has ever existed, before it became just a 'PC'.

My body is forcing me to slow down, now. My mind is...kinda pissed about
    it...

The best moments of my life have involved either computers or early consoles (pre-PlayStation). Hell, I literally paid my way through university by co-authoring a SNES emulator. Anyone remember zSnes? Anyone remember the 'silent partner' that zSknight kept mentioning? Yep. That was me.

Even now, every night, I listen to the best songs from Final Fantasy. I literally cannot sleep without it. Because there was a time when I could hear nothing else.

Even that redhead couldn't get my attention, sometimes. Much to my eventual dismay...T_T

    -------[That's the 'tiny' portion]-------

If you've kept reading...you know why I chose to be a SysOp.

I have a story to tell, and I'm not finished telling it. I used to write, but paper is useless, these days.

It is time for me to go back to my roots. It is time for me to be a SysOp.

And this is how PiBBS was born. I bought a Pi 4, and needed to give the old
3B+ (and myself) a reason to exist.

Hello McDoob, and welcome to fsxNet!

On 08 Dec 2021, McDoob said the following...

    Sounds familiar! :)

I started my BBS in the 90s and thought it was time to re-launch it (in some sense).

So far I've waded through echomail configuration and adjusted permissions etc., next will be to determine which file areas should be present, 25 years later... :)

And this is how PiBBS was born. I bought a Pi 4, and needed to give the
old 3B+ (and myself) a reason to exist.

A very nice use for it!

    :-D

    Best regards

Let me share a tiny portion of my story with you.

We are probably about the same age, and other than the redhead part, we
have very similar life experiences, ha.

Like almost anyone who can read this, a big reason I'm here is
    nostalgia.

True. Although now that I've been back in the scene for a couple years,
it's really not about nostalgia for me anymore. I've got new friends,
wholly new tech and platforms to play with -- it's really quite amazing
to see this community evolve -- even while some parts stay the same.

One thing that's definitely changed, other than a handful of
higher-traffic BBS, we are mostly all Sysops these days!

It is time for me to go back to my roots. It is time for me to be a
    SysOp.

And this is how PiBBS was born. I bought a Pi 4, and needed to give

Awesome! I'll definitely check it out. Welcome back!

Thanks for the intro ma man. I still have one of those redheads hanging

Never heard of the Final Fantasy OST before. Spotify provided
many examples. I liked some of what I heard! I can understand
why you would choose it for relaxing or for sleep. You may also
like the works of Two Steps From Hell, Gregorian, Yanni, and

The early Final Fantasies from NES had nice music, for the capabilities of the console.

There are countless remasters and remakes and orchestral arrangements.

Also, the main composer had a band which produced Heavy Metal versions of the Final Fantasy Music. It was epic :-)

Few years back there was a orchestra touring around Europe playing Final Fantasy songs. Went with my wife, amazing hearing the songs live by a orchestra.

    Hi, Ogg!

Never heard of the Final Fantasy OST before.

To be clear, my version of 'Final Fantasy OST' will not match yours.

I put in a lot of late nights, working on 'ffcompat' for zSnes. I fell
asleep (so very much) more than once, with the music still in my headphones...

Until you spend MONTHS falling asleep to the music from FF2 or FF3...you
simply can't understand what I mean...

like the works of Two Steps From Hell, Gregorian, Yanni, and
    Vangelis.

I will look into these names. I doubt they will strike the same chord in my heart...Again, I cannot explain...

But, I always enjoy listening to music I've never heard!

Hey McDoob! I'm thinking we have a lot in common as well... I had a Sinclair TS1000 (an americanized zx81 - like I have to tell you guys!)... the C=64 and a long line of pc's that I build... I also just got my fsxnet and fidonet node addresses... Always good to feel like a newby now and again...

Ha, I looked in the mirror and thought I was looking at the cover of Chessmaster 5000!! (not really - but damn close)

I can relate... I think I have 16 of them now... I kinda lost track at 15... feel free to stop by my place, the page sysop actually works on my pi now!

Thanks, for the sentiment... such a nice change from the 'dark side' of technology. I'll definitely swing by for a visit!

KOSK was a very popular theme in the local BBSes back in the early '90s. Apparently, local only to me. (^_^)

I saw that you stopped by earlier. It was the reminder I needed: get working
    on configuring PiBBS...

Next time you stop by, you'll see at least a couple of changes!
