Well, it was bound to happen eventually. On the 24th we turned the heat on.

I haven't yet switched the power off to the central air and put the cover on, I'm holding out for at least one more unseasonably warm day, but that's just me being in denial... ;)

The past couple of days have been cool, grey, gloomy & rainy. Looks like we may have a break in the rain tomorrow & Thursday, but back to rain just in time for the weekend.

To those of you living in the future, take good care of the warm weather for us. If you'd like to send it back early, I certainly wouldn't stop you... :)

It always seems to be the great fight of the season. "I'm not ready to turn the heat on yet!" That denial that winter is coming. My wife is the same way. She finally broke down and turned it on at night last week because it dropped down to 40øF. She's also the type that would have had the Christmas tree up last week if we weren't the one hosting Thanksgiving this year and there wouldn't be enough room for the family to move around the living room.

I think we've finally come to a good compromise on that one. The other half always wants to put the tree up way too early. I think we've finally agreed to wait until at least November 12th (the day after Remembrance Day) for all of that.

I turned it on for the 1st time tonight (was 13C, 55F, when I
got home tonight) and this morning at the shop (it was 15C, 59F
there) - and I live further north than you do!

I do that with shorts. I gave in a couple weeks ago though. I do only wear two sweaters at work though as it's too much coat to wear a winter coat when you're sitting in a car for 10 hours.

December 15 we put crap up and take it down Dec 26. That's if we even bother, the last few years we haven't.

Here on the California coast, we went from turning the heat on, to a massive wind/rain storm, to a predicted high of 72F (22c for the rest of you) this afternoon.

22 sounds nice. Currently outside my home it's 17C (~63F), tonight's low will be 10C (50F). Better than the 3C (~37F) from a few nights ago.

The tree a couple of doors down is really showing off its fall colours:

I was up visiting my parents about three hours north and their fall colours were in full swing. A couple more weeks and we may catch up to them.

lot warmer though. I'm sitting here at the pooty in a sarong.. chuckle.

I gave in and switched the circuit breaker off to our central AC today and put the cover on. Also took the opportunity to grab the ladder and clean out the dryer vent, wasn't as bad as it has been in the past, but still something we aim to do twice a year.

According to a local news service: "Winter is coming, Ontario — and La Nina is going to make it one to remember"

It looks like we're in for an earlier start to the snow along with "more significant" lake effect snow, which means we may want to get our snow blower tuned up sooner than later.

this is one thing where I live that the locals get excited to see. In my part of the world the further south you live the more likely you are to get some snow. But it's usually inland areas and not too bad for no more than 5-10 days over winter.

I live on the coast so sea temps often preclude anything coming down to sea level and if it's bad it can be just up on the hills. Still when it does come down lower it can close down a chunk of the city as buses can travel and schools close due to safety and ease of getting kids to and from school.

The last few years 'snow days' have been less and less..

We did once see an iceberg drifting off the coast that had floated down from Antarctica :)

I know some people who get excited about the snow, they are usually the ones who own skis or snowmobiles. I'm in neither of those camps.

I've noticed that about 'snow days' as well. I could usually count on one or two a year even 10 years ago, now-a-days not so much.

Couple that with working from home, and now snow days are a thing of the past... >:(

That would be a neat sight! I've not seen an iceberg in person myself, maybe I'll make it out to Newfoundland one day (only province I've not visited yet, along with any of the three territories) and get to check them out, preferably from the safety of land.

I bought a new washer and dryer last year, and took the opportunity to clean out the vent thoroughly. It's suprising what peace of mind that can offer, knowing you won't have a mid-wall fire break out. :)

I had a 20 year old washer and dryer that mostly worked, but was starting to have problems with it, and it finally broke to a point where I couldn't fix it.

I'm glad I did - the washer is agitatorless, and while I never understood those auto-sensing water level cycles, it barely covers the clothes with water. Using the dirt settings makes a huge difference - with a pre-soak I
can get anything out of anything.

My family has a cabin in the Sierra Nevada mountains - we got 3 feet of snow in a huge storm last weekend. Hoping for a good year, as it's been droughty
    of late.

It is nice to be able to be at the snow, and in 4 hours of snow, at the
    beach. We're lucky here.
