Facebook is Myspace without the stupid bands or Tom's mess... Twitter is the modern Town Square, where someone can be placed in the gallows and have the rest of the proverbial peasants free to hurl rotten vegetables.
I disagree I think a key difference with social media is that it's powered by algorithms. I'm not sure the same could be said of those 90s cyberspaces... or certainly not with the degrees of sophistication we see today and the vast amount of user generated metadata shared by folks online (often unknowingly) to help fuel said algorithms..
What Facebook and Twitter show me is how over time just a handful of platforms have managed to consolidate and dominate a space where some years ago there was a far wider offer of meeting spaces for folks online.
