From Spectre@21:3/101 to Anyone on Monday, October 18, 2021 20:20:00
Another one of these miraculous things crossed my desk today while I was casting about for something to do. So I thought I'd revisit HAPROXY and logging.

In the past my stumbling point for getting fail2ban functional was getting a decent log out of HAPROXY. It steadfastly refused to co-operate with any combination of command line jiggery pokery or config file setup. It looks
like I may have had it set, and at some point needed to reload syslogd perhaps... I start going over the notes again to get this working, behold
and lo, everything is in place and its actually pumping out connect logs, so
I have frequency and ip on tap.

I'll have to get the fail2ban cap on next to try and remember how the heck
that worked and how to point it at the current log, now I know where it is
and its active. But that I think can wait for tomorrow, and the extension of today's TUIT.

Well it might have been going swimmingly in haproxy land, but its going to
turn into a bitch and moan session about how I hate trying upgrade any installed system :/

Something thats happened since I last looked is fail2ban refuses to start
with some spurious errors about, error in <module>. Having a look about the consensus appears to be purge it and reinstall, you got some hangover stuff that needs tidying up. Fabbo on with it... further spurious errors while trying to get the thing to purge, manually removing the failed sections appeared to work. So far so good.. mostly...

Of course fail2ban now won't install either, more spurious errors about the same packages it had trouble purging, fail to install with the delightful
error of, "SyntaxErrror: invalid syntax" duh... seems to be something about python3.8 shrug...

These things in the past have just turned into rabbit holes for me, by the
time I get anything sorted, its just far easier to junk it and start again.
Not looking forward to trying to back stuff up or migrate the mysql
    databases.
