Who else is into retro gaming?

I really started getting into retro gaming when I first saw emulators appearing in the late 90s. I thought it was really cool that there were emulators that allowed playing NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, and other console games on my PC. Some emulators also had some fairly interesting features, such as allowing multi-player gaming with other people over the internet.

Although I have typically been more into PC gaming, I do enjoy console games. And for a while now, it seems there are many ways to emulate old systems, beyond emulation on a PC. A few years ago, I modded my Nintendo Wii and installed some emulators on it (though life got into the way, I got busy, and I haven't played the emulators on that as much as I thought I would). Before that, I bought a GCW Zero (an open-source handheld gaming system that supports emulators, among other things). Unfortunately, it seems the screen on my GCW Zero has failed and doesn't work well now. :/

In recent years, there's also the Classic Mini systems that the popular game companies have released; there was the NES Classic Mini & SNES Classic Mini from Nintendo, and then Sega, Sony, and TurboGrafX made their own versions for their respective systems. Those are generally moddable too, so you can add additional games.

Although I've been emulating old consoles for a while, sometimes I've missed having a real console. A long time ago, I had an original NES, a Nintendo 64, and a TurboGrafX-16. For a while, a SNES as well. I just bought a SNES on eBay.. I'm not sure what all I'll do with it, since I can play the games with emulators, but it might be fun.

I suppose you can count me in.

I don't play that much, but when I do, it is usually the old stuff. The reason is that the business model
surrounding old games was much more respectful to players than the business model around new games.

Also, simple games can be run on a toaster and I don't find it less entertaining than their modern
counterparts. My last playing system was a PS2 and I got off after that one went EOL.

I have some NES and SNES emulation set up, but as of late I have been playing DOS games the most. Early
Command and Conquer is fine even today. Dune is a nice combination of adventure and strategy.

However, the jewel of the crown are early roguelikes such as... actual Rogue! Go into the dungeon of
Doom, fight monsters, get their stuff and die! What is there not to like?

If you want to play something modern with a retro feel, I suggest Hyperrogue, which is a Roguelike which
takes place in a non-euclidean geometry. The game happens in hyperbolic space, which causes many
interesting in-game phenomena you can use to your advantage (or the monsters to theirs).

I decided to build an arcade style cabinet with controls (joysticks, trackball,

etc.) and used a 32" led tv for the display plus RGB lighting all running on a WIN10 machine running Launchbox/Big Box. Beside most of the console games (NES,

SNES, Atari, Play station, etc.) I have just about every arcade game made on it. Last count I had over 10,000 games. My next project is going to be a digital pinball cabinet.

That's cool. That's a lot of games though.. It can be hard to browse through too many things (paradox of choice).

This one looks odd, did you get hit by the phantom paragrapher? Your message has 4 or 5 blank lines between each line of text... Deliberate? Software weirdness?

Same thing I always think - when I make a retro pie setup, I like to hand
pick games... while I try to pick a few weird consoles, I only grab games
    that I'll actually play. :P

Yeah, I use Launchbox/Big Box so everything is divided into categories so it's not to bad to find stuff.

True. I have every MAME rom ever and update them with each release. But I play PacMan :) Who has time to browse 10K+ games?
