I saw this and felt sorry for the guy. I saw him take a tumble on stage a
year or so ago (watched it on YouTube) was amazed at how much he had
physically declined. I have to say his singing was not that good either
sadly. You know how you have the tune in your head (the radio version) and then you hear it live and the song is out of whack and the lead vocals are
off key... well that was what was (sadly) happening with Phil :(

I went to see Phil in Houston for my birthday in 2019. It was a great show. Sure, he can't play drums any more, his voice isn't what is was and he definitely can't dance, but he can still put on a spectacular show. There was
a very moving Genesis tribute section. His son, Nik, can hold his own on the drumset and his backing singers picked up the slack.

I have no doubts that I'm going to enjoy the Genesis show. I've only seen them live twice, both in 1992 in London and in Leeds. Some people have said they won't want to ruin the memory by seeing these old guys on stage, but either way, not many bands have stayed together for so long and produced so much quality music.

Good to hear. Yep I'm not 100% sold on the idea of seeing him live (assuming I ever could) given the voice has changed etc. I kinda like the soundtrack in my head now :)

I saw Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles live in recent years and enjoyed both of them.

Same here. I was excited to see Genesis on tour.. to bad it wasn't sooner.
The tickets for the show are super expensive for one but the other day I happened to see some video of his latest shows. Seems like it's a pretty good show overall but it's just sad to see him just sitting in a chair. Maybe it's best I didn't go to the show.

I've been listening to his music quite a bit lately and really like it. When I have heard some of his singing at more recent live concerts I felt he should have stopped. It seems like keeping the $$ coming in for him keeps him going but it seems sad as his health is not great and it really shows. I am suprised given the guy would have made a lot of $$ over the years.

I think this is true. And while it's also true Collins's voice is fragile now, it's not anything like out-of-tune or unmusical. In fact, some of the darker songs in the set, like "Mama" and "No Son of Mine," gain a new layer of emotion. They might not be the best-ever versions of these songs, but they'll definitely be real moments of note for fans in the future.

As for the rest of the band, they're playing at an incredibly high level. Instrumental sections like "Firth of Fifth" and "Cinema Show" are possibly at faster tempos than they were being played in the mid-70s. Banks, Rutherford, and Stuermer really meld well with Nik Collins.

Of course, sometimes artists realized they had to do that in their prime. Rush/Geddy Lee was already taking 2112 a step down on its first tour. ELP also did the same with part of Karn Evil 9. They started in a lower key, and then did a key change back to the original before the parts people would have known from the single edit (the "Welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends" part).

Hearing Geddy Lee trying to hit the highs in "Tom Sawyer" later in their career was tough to listen to - but their musicianship was always amazing and carried me through.

As far as the musicianship went, it was top-notch, if not better, than in their prime years. Neil always worked on technique, and worked with teachers even in later years. When your drummer can still carry the rhythm and power, everything else has a tendency to fall into place (not that there was ever a threat of Geddy or Alex not being able to keep up, mind you).

Having said that, Geddy really struggled towards the end. Seeing them live in arenas blunted the edges, since it's so loud and there's so much echo, but hearing the recordings (especially boots) could make you cringe a little. Again though, it's also the strain of touring, and even placement of the song in the set. "Tom Sawyer" was often very late in the set, if not in the encore. That certainly never helped matters!

My gateway was Selling England by the Pound, by way of a prog-rock obsession
in my early 20s (early 2000s). I'd heard the massive hits of the 80s when I
was younger, but I think the whole "grunge" and "alt" sensibilities popular when I was forming my musical tastes as a teen made it harder for me to appreciate the 80s era at first. Luckily, once Gabriel kicked down the Genesis door, as it were, Collins could eventually walk through, as well. Been a fan
    of it all ever since!
